Emiliano Sala: Three Southampton fans fined for plane gestures

Wednesday 24th July 2019

Three football fans who made aeroplane taunts after the death of Emiliano Sala have been fined.

James Downey, Mark Ferrett and Jake Carman were filmed by Cardiff fans making the gesture

The trio made the "abusive gestures" shortly after a minute's silence in memory of the player at Southampton's match against Cardiff in February.

It was the first time the Welsh side had played since the Argentine striker's death in a plane crash on 21 January.

One of the men was also given a four-year football banning order.

Emiliano Sala had been flying from Nantes, in France, to join Cardiff City when the light aircraft he was in crashed into the sea.
On 9 February, Southampton Magistrates' Court heard, fans at St Mary's stadium joined clubs across the country in observing a pre-match silence.

About 25 minutes into the game, prosecutors said, there was a "change in the atmosphere" when Cardiff fans saw home supporters making gestures.

Fans of both teams contacted police, and the three men were eventually charged.

One 47-year-old James Downey, admitted making a "forward diving motion" mimicking a plane.

Jake Carman, 49, told police he was "just being stupid", while Mark Ferrett, 53, said he had "let myself down and the club down".

Each man admitted using threatening, abusive words or behaviour likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress.

Downey, of Southlands Way, Shoreham-by-sea, was fined £520

Carman, of Deacon Road, Southampton, was fined £635

Ferrett of Romsey Road, Lockerley, was fined £427

Carman and Ferrett are contesting football banning orders, which would prevent them attending further matches.
Hampshire Constabulary's football officer Andrew Darbyshire said the minute's silence before the game was "impeccably observed" but the three men were a "small minority whose behaviour goes over the line".

Shows one thing in particular, the days of hiding in a crowd to escape detection are over. They got what they deserved but I don't think they would have been caught back in the day but would have probably started a riot.

Good job this technology wasn’t available back in the day as you guys would have no fans left with the mocking of Terry Coles and Alan Davies’ deaths. That was widespread and not just 1 or 2 idiots.

Still to this day it is one of the most bemusing things for me, why normal and decent people turn into these people as soon as they enter a stadium. Guaranteed they wouldn’t dream of mocking the death of players or fans outside of the football scenario.

Glad these three have been banned anyway, no place for it.

Good to see that justice has been served.

I live in Dorset and it was the 2nd lead story on the local BBC South news. They interviewed the Saints Stadium Officer and he stated both Cardiff and Southampton fans complained during and straight after the match, fair play to the sensible Saints fans.

I was there that day and as you say, almost all saints fans were superb.
I was waiting outside the ground when my mate had gone for a programme and I’ll always remember an elderly lady (with the rest of her family) came over to me and said ‘We are so sorry about what happened to your player. God bless him’. She then kissed the daffodil that she had in her hand.
I’ll never forget that.
Unfortunately there’s always one or two plonkers...at every club.

We have our idiots too, I’ve heard some bad chants in my time that I have been ashamed of to be associated. But I have never witnessed widespread mocking of the death of a player or fan from Swansea fans however. Our minute silence for Sala was impeccably respected and have never heard or seen anyone mocking your fan that died either. The vicious side of the rivalry does seem to come from one side, the gas a jack chant and hissing noise is just as bad as anything reported here in this article for example. I’m not stirring just saying it as it is.

I remember real respect shown through applause at the cc stadium when our stadium announcer mentioned that Brendan Rogers’ mother had passed away.
Both sets of fans have excellent supporters but ALL unfortunately have a minority that let themselves and their club down.
Don’t want to argue about it mate but a few Swansea ‘fans’ had been on FB mocking Salas death and planning to sing it at an away game.
No doubt some of ours would do the same if the tables were turned.
As I said, ALL clubs have a thoughtless minority; like society as a whole.

Then those Swansea fans deserve the same contempt regardless. I have no problem on calling out Swansea fans should their behaviour call for it. Just don’t think I can ever envisage a scenario where the whole of the singing crowd would be mocking deaths that’s all, just wouldn’t happen the other way around.

I’m certain that if the untimely death of Alan Davies happened now, respect would be shown in a minutes silence. There’s a different atmosphere at grounds now - certainly at the cc stadium - but I was there to witness a large crowd at Ninian Park singing about ‘gas a jack’ etc along with sickening racist chants and that was unfortunately a regular occurrence at many grounds - I remember the Bennett brothers getting awful abuse at the Vetch and Nathan Blake has also spoken of terrible racist comments from the crowd on the North Bank.

Basically what I’m saying is that I think 99% of supporters can now be trusted to behave and act in a sensible way nowadays but this wasn’t always the case.
