Cardiff City 1-1 Real Valladolid: Omar Bogle on target again as Bluebirds end pre-season tour with penalty shootout win

The forward was on the scoresheet once again out in Edmonton

SUNDAY 21 JUL 2019

Omar Bogle netted his second goal in as many pre-season games as Cardiff City earned a penalty shootout win over Real Valladolid in Edmonton.

Having rescued a 1-1 draw against New Mexico with a stunning freekick on Friday, Bogle was on hand again here, netting just before the break in a first half largely short on chances.

On this occasion, however, it was Cardiff who were pinned back, with Federico Barba coming off the bench to level midway through the second half.

Joe Day was the hero in the resulting shootout, saving two spot kicks, with Josh Murphy smashing home the decisive penalty to hand Cardiff a 4-2 shootout win.

And, despite missing his penalty, this was another feather in the cap for Bogle.

One of seven changes to the team that were held in Albuquerque, the 25-year old has certainly seized his opportunity to shine on this tour, with his Cardiff career previously looking hugely uncertain.

The former Grimsby Town man has spent the last season-and-a-half out on loan after falling out of favour with Neil Warnock, and was largely expected to be moved on this summer.

However, his performances out on tour have surely given his boss something to think about, particularly in light of Kenneth Zohore's recent departure.

Warnock remains in the hunt for a striker this summer, but Bogle may well feel he has something to offer when the team head back over the Atlantic.

The Yorkshireman also got a chance to assess Junior Hoilett for the first time the summer, with the winger returning to action for the first time since his exploits for Canada in the Gold Cup.

Hoilett, wearing the captain's armband, nearly made an impact after just eight minutes, slicing the Valladolid defence with a cutting through ball for Bogle, who was then denied by an onrushing Jose Antonio Caro.

Despite that promising start, Cardiff spent much of the first half on the back foot, with their opponents dominating possession during the early exchanges.

Waldo Rubio whistled an early effort past the post, before Sergi Guardiola fired over from inside the area following a superb Nacho Martinez cross.

But, while they continued to see little of the ball before the break, Cardiff keeper Day was on the whole largely untroubled.

And City were rewarded for their patience five minutes before half-time.

A teasing Greg Cunningham cross found Bogle inside the area, allowing the striker to apply a cool finish and divert home.

Valladolid made a number of changes at the break, and continued to see plenty of the ball, although clear-cut chances remained ellusive.

Day had to be alert to keep out Sandro Ramirez's effort from distance, and Cardiff seemed on course for a well-earned victory.

But Valladolid weren't to be denied, and levelled just after the hour, a scuffed shot from Barba enough to beat Day and ultimately take the contest to penalties.

The La Liga outfit nearly won it late on, but David Mayoral could only drag wide following some great work from Kike Perez, while Joe Bennett also came close at the other end deep into stoppage time.

Cardiff emerged victorious following the penalty shootout, although Warnock is unlikely to read too much into that side of things as his side head home.

City's final pre-season friendly of the summer will be a tough test at home to Patrick Vieira's Nice, before kicking off their Championship campaign at home to Wigan the following Saturday.

I wonder if Neil is going to change his mind re Bogle, was he just there to get fit and demonstrate to other clubs his ability ? or was he there to show Neil what he can do - does Neil ever change his mind on players ?

A poster claimed yesterday that Bogle could be our 20 goal striker this season. Just 18 more to go ;)

I remember Bogle breaking into the first team back in 2017 and hitting a swift 3 goals I believe it was - classy striker's goals - and I recall thinking this young guy could be the 20 goal a year man we need. I believe he was injured just after and never really got back into the side after that but there is a quality striker in there and I wouldn't be surprised if he did a great job up front for us this season. He is still young, fit, hungry and probably feels he has something to prove.

Bring it on!!

You seem to have a better take on Bogle than I have. For once though I would love to see us get something out of a striker we already have rather than forking out £15m+ on a player who could well turn out to be only as good as what we already have. Bogle could be a dark horse?

I was pretty impressed with Bogle the times I seen him play and thought he looked quite promising (minus the red card at Bristol). From what I have read though his attitude is terrible. Maybe he has been given one last chance to sort his attitude out or maybe Warnock knows he is desperate for a striker. I havnt watched any of the friendlies but I would like to see how him an Reid link up. Given a good run of games I think we would see a similar return from Bogle as what we got from Zohore the season we got promoted. If patterson can do it I am sure someone with the natural movement of a striker can get close given the chance.

Signing a quality striker should be our priority though. Someone who will likely get 15+ goals and not someone who would be very lucky to get to double figures. As it stands I think Ward, Bogle and Madine would struggle to get 10 goals.

He seems to be one of those players who has potential but is yet to fulfill it.He might just have a good season for us but his record in the championship is not good.
He scored loads of goals for Paul Hurst at Grimsby since then Hurst has had three clubs Shrewsbury, Ipswich and Scunthope and has not wanted to sign Bogle even on loan for any of those clubs even though they could of done with a decent striker. He has hinted it is because the player is trouble off the field. Can't say for certain it is true but the rumours seem to follow him around.
