Republic of Ireland ace Glenn Whelan rejects move to Cyprus with Blackburn, Cardiff and Charlton all interested

GLENN WHELAN has turned down a move to Cyprus with Blackburn Rovers, Cardiff City and Charlton Athletic all interested.

The Ireland midfielder is weighing up his options but is understood to be keen on remaining in England.

That led him to reject an offer for Cypriot club Pafos while he would favour a club in the Championship over a switch to Scotland where Aberdeen, Hearts and Hibernian are keen.

SunSport has learnt that Blackburn, Cardiff and Charlton are all interested.

Speaking in June, the ex-Villa midfielder revealed that staying in the Ireland team will be one of the deciding factors in his next club move.

He said: Whelan said: “I’ve had people on the phone, it hasn’t stopped for the last few days. I had one or two foreign options.

“But when I spoke to the manager, it was about playing as high as I can. So for me to go to a different league, which is probably not as competitive as the Premier League or the Championship . . . if I do that I think my options would be limited to come back into the international stuff.

“The manager wants me to try and play as high as I can to have a chance of coming in here. I’m open to anything, to be honest.”

Having been retired at international level by Martin O’Neill last year before McCarthy brought him back in March, Whelan insists he never thought about calling it quits altogether.

Adamant that his club career will go on, he smiled: “Definitely. I’ve just had Real Madrid on the phone there before I came in!

I’m normally not one to want a rumour to be false. But I’d be absolutely delighted if there’s no legs in this story. Whelan is one of those players I’ve always disliked for no apparent reason, and always will. So I hope he doesn’t sign for us.

Please god no. He wasn't even very good for Villa last season.Past his sell by date just before last season started. A bit of knocking the ball about and back to the pool for the afternoon in Cyprus sounds about right for him.

Let’s hope this is paper talk. He’s way past it. In fact, he was past it 2/3 years ago. If this is the type of midfielder we’re looking to get then we’re not going to be challenging for promotion this season.

We should be looking for young, hungry midfielders with pace and trickery to get our forwards in on goal, not 35 year olds looking for one last paycheque.

Typical Agent leak trying for one past payday for the client.

Look at the spread of clubs...... recently relegated from Prem, Championship survival and recent promotion to the Championship.

LITERALLY casting the net far and wide.

Well if he wants to "remain in England" that rules us out. No big loss.

Hopefully not gonna happen. The squad is old enough without adding a 35 year old CM who was crap whenever I watched Aston Villa last season. Wish we had a player similar to Conor Hourihane, think he's a damn good Cm.

Whelan is a top pro and if he does come to city you will not be disappointed as he is a typical Warnock player a born winner and on a free and still fit as a flee a nice steady Eddie or will tw*t you as well dispute his age

I keep reading about our old squad but I don't think we have an old squad really. Warnock likes experienced defenders but has also brought in Nelson. Other than that I think our squad is at a good age.

Don't know about everyone. Very clever move that was. Wish there was another striker around with his capabilities
