Joey Barton: Fleetwood Town manager charged with actual bodily harm
Joey Barton, the Fleetwood Town manager, has been charged with actual bodily harm following a post-match tunnel incident with Barnsley boss Daniel Stendel.
South Yorkshire Police, which had been investigating the case for three months, said Barton will appear before magistrates on October 9. Stendel, 45, who is from Frankfurt in Germany, required dental treatment after the alleged confrontation which followed Barnsley's 4-2 victory over Fleetwood at Oakwell. Witnesses said they saw Stendel with blood pouring from his face afterwards.
Barnsley have already complained to both the Football Association and the EFL over the attack, but Barton has remained as manager at Fleetwood.
The incident took place in the tunnel at Barnsley on April 13 and police said a man - understood to be Stendel - was left with facial injuries.
Officers and Fleetwood Town refused to confirm whether the man in custody was Barton, but suspects' names can be confirmed by police if charges are brought by the Crown Prosecution Service.
A statement by the force said: "A man has been charged following an incident at Barnsley Football Club in April 2019. Joseph Barton, 36, of Fox Bank Close, Widnes, has been charged with actual bodily harm contrary to section 47 assault and has been bailed to appear before Barnsley Magistrates Court on Wednesday 9 October 2019."
On the evening of the alleged attack, footage tweeted by Sky Sports News showed Barton leaving the ground, but the car he was travelling in was stopped by police in the stadium's car park.
The Fleetwood job is Barton's first managerial position, and the club finished the last League One season in 11th place. The 36-year-old former midfielder took up the role at Highbury last summer after a playing career marked by controversy.
