Cardiff City's forgotten men have just given Neil Warnock something to think about

The Bluebirds may be stateside, but Gary Madine and Lee Tomlin are scoring goals in the UK

Gary Madine and Lee Tomlin have given Neil Warnock a pre-season boost after impressing for the under-23s in their friendly at Tavistock.

While Warnock's first-team players went about their business in an open training session in America, the pair were taking their opportunity with Ronnie Jepson's side in west Devon.

Madine netted a 22-minute hat-trick against the Devonshire outfit, while Tomlin added the Bluebirds' fifth of the first-half after Jacob Evans had opened the scoring.

The pair were unable to travel to the States due to visa issues but Warnock had insisted that both still had a chance to impress even if they weren't with the first team.

And after Tomlin scored the only goal in the under-23s' draw with Larkhall Athletic, a flurry of goals against Tavistock would have done their chances of forcing their way into Warnock's plans no harm.

Missing out on the tour of America might have looked like the end of the duo's careers in south Wales - with both having struggled to make an impact with the Bluebirds.

But with Tomlin in particular having been on the comeback trail this summer after returning to the club in good shape and keen to break into the Yorkshireman's plans, it appears that he will be given every chance to succeed.

Madine's future is a little less clear in terms of whether he stays or goes, but a hat-trick will certainly help his case either way.

Goalkeeper Alex Smithies, who also didn't travel to the States, was handed a start between the sticks.

Can't do confidence any harm despite quality of opposition. Let's hope they can take it forward.

A much stronger team went there last year and only managed 0-6.

That's 5 in two against Tavistock for Madine.
