Steve Bruce resigns... Heading to Newcastle it seems

BBC

Monday 15th July 2019

Steve Bruce has resigned as head coach of Sheffield Wednesday amid reports he is due to be appointed as the manager of Newcastle United.

Bruce was only appointed in January and did not actually take over for another month, guiding them to a 12th-place finish in the Championship.

The Magpies held talks with 58-year-old Bruce over the position on Saturday after Rafael Benitez left last month.

He leaves Hillsborough with assistants Steve Agnew and Stephen Clemence.

Newcastle have flown to China without a manager as they prepare to face Wolves in the Premier League Asia Trophy in Nanjing on Wednesday.

Born near Newcastle and a boyhood Magpies fan, former Sunderland and Aston Villa Bruce told BBC Radio Sheffield on Sunday: "It's happened so quickly that I've got to take stock of the whole situation."

"Speculation is speculation. It's in the hands of the clubs. For me there's nothing to talk about until the two clubs reach some sort of compromise."

BRUCE RESIGNS FROM WEDNESDAY

Sky Sports:

Steve Bruce has left Sheffield Wednesday after confirming over the weekend that he had held talks with Newcastle to become Rafael Benitez's successor, Sky Sports News understands.

The 58-year-old led Wednesday to a 12th-place finish in the Sky Bet Championship last season after taking over from Dutchman Jos Luhukay in January.

Newcastle made an official approach for Bruce last week and on Saturday, Bruce told Sky Sports News: "It's in the hands of the two clubs at the moment. There is nothing really to talk about until the two clubs reach some sort of a compromise."
