Steve Bruce has resigned as head coach of Sheffield Wednesday amid reports he is due to be appointed as the manager of Newcastle United

Newcastle are expected to appoint Steve Bruce as Rafa Benitez's successor, but fans are far from happy and there is still uncertainty surrounding takeover talks and transfers.

Here, Sky Sports News' north-east reporter Keith Downie offers an insight into what's happening at the club, from the managerial search to potential spending before the transfer deadline.

Newcastle latest: Steve Bruce, takeover, transfers

'Mike Ashley knows that Steve Bruce is desperate for the job'

Bruce seen as 'safe pair of hands'

My understanding is that Newcastle are set to offer Bruce the job. The club have been in dialogue with his representatives and unless there are any hitches over compensation with Sheffield Wednesday, I expect the appointment to be announced before the squad fly to China on Saturday.

I care not about Steve Bruce nor Newcastle United; but there's something a little unsavoury about this, if it goes ahead

Steve Bruce, renowned by leaving clubs in the lurch, has done a bit of a dirty on Sheffield Wednesday at this point and how can he be confident that (a) he will be given time, if Mike Ahsley sells up as expected, and (b) he's going to get any more money to spend than Rafa?

The Newcastle job seems a dead rubber to me and I thought it might better suit someone in need of work rather than someone already in a decent club job :?

I agree It will give him a heart attack that job, why he would want that stress and hassle is beyond me

I bet they are...from internationally renowned management genius to journeyman! :thumbright:

His management of the Mackems was seen as a betrayal; although he smartly stated he thought part of the reason for sacking him was his love of the Toon! :laughing6:

Seems employing Steve 'journeyman' Bruce is going to cost Mike 'Gravy Veined' Ashley more than if he'd paid Rafa what he wanted! :o

Nicked from Facebook-

Newcastle moving from Rafa Benitez to Steve Bruce is the equivalent of shagging Michelle Keegan only to withdraw and finish off in Susan Boyle.

He’s from Newcastle and there in the Premier League of course he’s going to want to go manage them.

Simon Jordan doesn't have many nice thing to say about him.

Probably makes sense as a manager for Newcastle with the mess they are in.

You clearly don't now the Newcastle fans and/or their opinion of any 'local' that has connections with the Mackems

Equally, you (again) miss the point that Newcastle isn't a stable environment for any manager at the moment; least of all when you are a t a decent and stable club already

Speaks volumes about Steve Bruce as a character that he is once again prepared to leave another club in the lurch
