Three reasons Cardiff City should sign FC Hamburg's Lewis Holtby, as reported links remain

With the start of the new Championship campaign edging ever closer, Cardiff City manager Neil Warnock will undoubtedly be wanting to bring in some fresh faces to the club over the coming weeks.

Therefore, it is not at all surprising that the 70-year-old is being linked with a move for one of German football’s most in-demand free agents.

According to Spox, the Bluebirds are reportedly interested in signing Lewis Holtby who opted against extending his stay at Hamburg earlier this summer.

Although Cardiff will fancy their chances of sealing a deal, any slip-ups could see the midfielder end up in Turkey with Fenerbahce, Galatasaray and Besiktas all thought to be keeping tabs on his current situation.

Keeping this in mind, here are three reasons why we think the Bluebirds should be doing all they can to secure the services of Holtby between now and August…

He showed some real moments of quality at Hamburg last season

A mainstay in Hamburg’s side for the majority of the 2018/19 campaign, Holtby produced some real moments of quality in the German second division with his performances against FC Heidenheim and SV Darmstadt particularly standing out.

Although his year was cut short in April due to suspension, the midfielder still managed to record a total of 10 direct goal contributions in all competitions for Die Rothosen.

If he can replicate this kind of form in a Cardiff shirt next season, there is no reason why the Welsh outfit cannot launch a sustained bid for promotion in the Championship.

Warnock could be the perfect man to help him reach new heights

Whereas it is fair to say that Holtby has failed to reach the heights which were expected of him when he was coming through as a youngster at Schalke, there is still plenty of time left for him in his career to improve as a player.

Yet in order to have the best chance of taking his game to a new level, he may need the guidance of a manager like Warnock who has experienced just about everything there is to see in football.

Having nurtured the talents of Nathaniel Mendez-Laing and Junior Hoilett in recent years, the former Sheffield United boss will be confident that he can be the man to finally get the very best out of Holtby over the coming years.

He may end up being the ideal replacement for Victor Camarasa

One of the only shining lights in what was a very unforgiving Premier League campaign, Victor Camarasa returned to parent-club Real Betis last month after his loan deal at Cardiff expired.

With the Spaniard leaving behind a huge void in the centre of midfield, it could be argued that Holtby may turn out to be the ideal replacement for him.

As well having the ability to provide a killer pass, the former Tottenham Hotspur star is also more than capable of hitting the target himself having fired in 67 goals since making his professional debut as a teenager in 2007.
