Isaac Hayden determined to leave Newcastle United in the summer

Isaac Hayden wants to return south

Isaac Hayden is determined to ensure Newcastle United’s game against Brighton this weekend will be his last for the club as he warned there are no excuses not to sell him.

Hayden tried to force a transfer in August last year, as his partner had recently had a baby and they both said they wanted to be nearer their families down south.

That was not a good enough reason for Newcastle’s manager, Rafa Benitez, who refused to allow Hayden to be sold because there was not enough time left in the window to sign a replacement, much to Hayden’s initial annoyance.

The former England under-21 international’s mood was not helped by the fact he could not get a game at the start of the season, spending most of the opening few months on the bench, effectively fourth choice behind Mo Diame, Jonjo Shelvey and Ki.

But Hayden has been one of Newcastle’s stand-out players over the course of the second half of the campaign, excelling after injuries had sidelined all three of his rivals.

The 24 year-old ended the season as Benitez’s first choice in the centre of midfield and there will be plenty of interest from Premier League clubs as a result. Brighton tried to buy him last year and may well return with a bid, although West Ham and newly promoted Norwich City could also feature.

The good news for Newcastle is that Hayden’s value has risen on the back of his excellent form and they will look to make a large profit on the £2.6 million they spent to sign him from Arsenal in 2016. They are unlikely to entertain bids of less than £15m, and could even push the asking price up to £20m.

Hayden, though, is adamant he will not change his mind about wanting to relocate his family, even though Newcastle’s supporters urged him to stay, both during and after the 3-2 defeat to Liverpool last weekend.

“I think I will be going,” he said in the aftermath of Newcastle’s final home game of the season. “I have spoken to the club about it and they’ve been open and honest with me.

“I’m pretty sure this will be my last game at home. In football, you never know, so I can’t say for definite, although it’s looking like my last game here.

“Nothing has changed. It’s not what is best for me or my family to be playing here next season and to be doing the travelling I have done this season. It’s unfortunate but the club know my stance and have known it for a year now. There is no excuses going into the summer. It’s about getting the deal right for the club and for myself.

“It’s a fantastic club. You wouldn’t want to actively try to leave a club when you have 52,000 every home game. But, for me, I have a daughter and a fiancee, soon to be wife, who I have to put first.

“To me, they are more important than football will ever be. Hopefully, something can be done and the club have been quite proactive with that, so I don’t think there will be a problem.”

Says 'south' and likely to a Premier League team, so the Midlands, so maybe (Villa, Wolves, etc.)?

Only Cardiff City of the Welsh clubs could even contemplate signing him; but sure they won't at those prices!
