Ex-Championship defender Anthony Gerrard has joined National League side Chesterfield.

The 33-year-old has signed a two-year deal with the Spirerites, as announced by their official club website today.

Gerrard has been in the hunt for a new club following his release by League Two side Carlisle United and has been handed an opportunity by Chesterfield boss John Sheridan.

He is vastly experienced defender who has spent his whole career in the Football League, racking up over 500 appearances.

Gerrard, who is the cousin of Liverpool and England legend Steven, started out at Everton but moved to Walsall in 2005.

He spent four years with the Saddlers before he was signed by Cardiff City in July 2009. He went onto play 74 times for the Bluebirds and played in their League Cup final defeat to Liverpool at Wembley in 2012.

Gerrard also spent the 2010/11 season on loan at Hull City and won the Tigers’ Player of the Season for that year.

He moved onto Huddersfield Town in August 2012 and spent three years with the Terriers before dropping into the lower leagues for spells at Shrewsbury Town, Oldham Athletic and then Carlisle United in the last campaign.

Gerrard’s aim now will be helping Chesterfield return to League Two. Their boss Sheridan has told their official club website: “I’ve been trying to get Anthony for a while now and I think he’ll be a top player for us. He’s played at a higher level and he’s just what we need.”
