Significant update emerges in Cardiff City’s pursuit of midfielder
Wednesday 19th June 2019
Rotherham United midfielder Will Vaulks is set to undergo a medical at Cardiff City this week with a deal agreed between the clubs, according to journalist Andy Giddings.
Sheffield Wednesday were reportedly also in for Vaulks, but it appears the Bluebirds have won the race for the Welsh midfielder who was relegated from the Championship with Rotherham last season.
Neil Warnock has been aiming to strengthen his side’s midfield following the departures of Stuart O’Keefe, Victor Camarasa and Aron Gunnarsson after relegation, and it appears he has pinpointed Vaulks as a primary target.
The report states Vaulks will seal his move to the Cardiff City Stadium when he returns from his holiday, with the clubs having agreed a fee which could rise as high as £3.5million.
The 25-year-old impressed at the heart of the Millers’ midfield last season, making a total of 43 appearances and captaining Paul Warne’s side with regularity. His performances also earned him a call-up to the Welsh national side back in March.
The deal for Vaulks will also see the midfielder’s former club Falkirk net a windfall as part of a sell-on clause.
The Verdict
I think this is a good deal for all parties concerned.
Rotherham will get a respectable fee for a player who only has one year left on his contract, while Cardiff secure a solid Championship midfielder for a fee they will have no qualms paying up.
Vaulks proved he is a highly capable midfielder in the second tier throughout last season and I think his tireless work rate will mean he should fit right in to Warnock’s industrious side.
