Let's all laugh at England (again)

Thu Jun 06, 2019 9:25 pm

To think they were going to win tonight (easily) and their first trophy since 66. Very easily beaten tonight looking at the stats.

I've only seen the goals - which are hilarious if you haven't seen them.

Personally I like to see England do well. I live in the country and know a lot of English people - they're not all arrogant like their press.

Wales always come first obviously, but have more of a connection to England than any other nation except Wales.

But to be fair, they were outplayed tonight. The better team by far won. A lot of people underestimated Holland, who have been rejuvenated recently under Koeman. They'll be a force over the next few years with the players they have coming through.

I'm with you, Ned

Most of us have a drop of English blood in us somewhere; deny it or not! ;)

trouble is ,if they were to win something we get treated to it being shoved at us as from all angles...mostly unintentional because quite simply we watch the same TV, read the same press...we complain because we have nothing to compare it to...
do the French, German and Spanish sports TV channels go on about past victories ?..id have thought they do..

SVEN

I think all lot of welsh people get peed off with the media tv etc when England play because its usually overkill
I have no beef with english people per se, my best mate was from aston brum, and we all know most of our team are english, its just when there national team play it all goes into overdrive .
I settled down to watch the swiss Portugal game the other night before kick off i genuinely wanted to hear about these to teams there players etc and all we had was england chatter right upto kick off,
when england are playing there is no chatter about who is playing the next day, or who played the night before etc,so it does make me laugh when it all goes t.ts up
because of the big build up,
so hopefully we are allowed a bit
of laugh when the following day
the description of the game
is given in one sentence, with the least ammount of coverage.

I'm with you. They overhype themselves so much they run the risk of looking stupid when they fail....which they always do. Totally outplayed for large parts of the game, it was only the pace and quality of England's forwards that gave them any sort of hope. The Dutch bossed it and deserved their win. And just like you, it isn't an anti English thing. There's good and bad in all races. Just don't like their moronic press/media or their football and rugby teams. I suppose it's one of the problems you get in a heavily lopsided United Kingdom. The media is so England centric it's bound to wind up many people from the other nations.

I know it's banter etc and it's right to take the piss out of them and it will be a sad day when that ends but to be fair they did well to get there.

As a footnote
I have struggled to find any news on last nights game.

But now its the womans turn,
Main sports news on sky is about the
Womans game starting in france

But you guessed its 5 mins of englands lionesses who play on sunday, its friday lunchtime now,
no mention of the opening game or no mention of englands opponent's
the "scots" will they ever learn,

Oh and have yet to hear anything about wales v Croatia tomorrow afternoon

Was reading a few posts on the BBC site yesterday,a few were picking on the welsh, saying we want to be English etc etc how we won't ever win the rugby world cup,and so on,I was pissing myself tho, watching them lash out at all and sundry, var included :laughing6: considering we had won the slam at rugby,I agree though, the press, plus the minority of dickheads causing trouble, tends to put people off wishing them luck ;) :laughing5: :old: :bluebird:

It’s not strictly English media though is it? It’s supposed to be British - hence the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation). Granted, their headquarters are in England and the vast majority of workers would be English but they do not just represent England alone. Personally, I don’t have too much of a problem with them reporting on their games in the days building up to it but it’s the fact that not only do they shove it into our faces, they fail to report on Wales’ or Scotland’s games or even Northern Ireland’s games even half the amount in comparison to a single England game. In all honesty, I think more reporting is done on a single England game than Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland’s combined.

It doesn’t just happen on a national dimension though, it also happens on club levels, Cardiff and Swansea have both been consistently undermined by Match of the Day during their spells in the Premier League and are also perceived as being outsiders and thus do not belong in what they call the “English” football league and therefore we should ‘go and play in the Welsh football league’. Little are they informed though that we had been a part of the FOOTBALL LEAGUE long before any Welsh league was established - the original football league which had only been incorrectly named the ENGLISH football league in the past decade. What I’m trying to say here is that there is an enormous amount of unneeded bias towards us and it is accentuated by the media which is supposedly representing all of the home nations.

Bottom line is, whether we win or lose, regardless of who we’re playing, it’s sometimes satisfying to see those who supposedly look down on us lose. Nothing to do with English people per se, but a combination of other factors.

you do make some good and valid points but also throw a few things in that are dubious at best...why do you find it wrong that the English football league uses the word England ...when almost every other association does likewise and infact all make name changes as they go and many do have cross border teams...and MOTD was there really bias , yes we were on less and later in the shows than the likes of Man City and Liverpool but was our air time reflective of our league position or bias ?

if your going to make a case for bias i think its better made by not trying to add things that maybe are not there..

'Wrong' and 'incorrect' does not strictly mean the same thing. I did not say it's wrong but incorrect. It's incorrectly named because it's not solely english teams whom take part but also Welsh and Scottish teams. However, it isn't wrong. I pointed this out to accentuate an example which can exaggerate the misconception that teams such as Cardiff and Swansea don't belong in this football league. The sustainability of this misconception therefore reinforces the bias towards Welsh sides.

As for bias within the MOTD studio; this doesn't just take the form of listings or timings but also reflection. It is obvious that the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea etc. would get more 'reflection' than teams fighting for survival, however even the likes of Huddersfield and Fulham have had far more time to enjoy (or the opposite) the opinions of those on MOTD. I'm sure that (I think it might be Lawrenson or Crooks) had predicted Cardiff to win just once this season and the last spell we had in the Premier League and although we aren't a side that have the quality to be winning every game, I'm just pointing out the fact that pundits are quick to rule us out and bury us within the ground and yet are able to focus on teams who are doing even worse than us.

Your opinion might be different to mine and my opinion may be different to others but it is undeniable that bias towards Welsh football teams exists within the British media.
