Liverpool make shock enquiry for Cardiff City goalkeeper Neil Etheridge in fresh transfer twist following Aston Villa bid

It's reported the Bluebirds would only consider offers above £10m.

By Tom Coleman

Wednesday 5th June 2019

Liverpool could be about to join the race for Cardiff City goalkeeper Neil Etheridge's signature.

WalesOnline understands the Reds have made an initial enquiry over his availability this summer, but have not yet launched a formal approach.

Despite boasting one of the Premier League's best number ones in Brazilian Alisson Becker, Liverpool are likely to be in the market for a new goalkeeper this summer, with deputies Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius both strongly linked with moves away.

The Champions League winners were previously tipped for a move for West Ham United's Adrian, although those links have since been played down by reports on Merseyside.

It's understood the Reds are now keeping tabs on Etheridge, who's already attracted plenty of attention since Cardiff's relegation to the Championship.

Liverpool have already been linked with a potential move for former Bluebirds stopper David Marshall.

Aston Villa have already had a bid of around £8m knocked back and are reportedly weighing up another move, while Fulham and West Ham have also previously been credited with interest.

It's understood that Villa Park is currently Etheridge's preferred destination should he move on, with the Philippines international believed to enjoy a good working relationship with boss Dean Smith and goalkeeping coach Neil Cutler, both of whom helped launch the 29-year old's career at Walsall.

With Villa believed to be in the market for a number one keeper, they are clearly more likely to offer Etheridge more regular game time.

Nevertheless, recent comments suggest he would be open to fighting for a place in a team higher up the footballing foodchain.

He recent told the Filipino press : "You’re one step away, you’re one injury away, a couple of training sessions away from getting that No. 1 shirt, so there are how many ways you must look at it.

"You sit on the bench in the Premier League for one week, you could be playing for the rest of the season if the No. 1 at that time had a bad game."

Cardiff owner Vincent Tan is keen to keep hold of Etheridge, but a big money offer could yet force the Bluebirds' hand with the goalkeeper known to be keen to remain in the Premier League.

It's reported the Bluebirds would only consider offers above £10m.

Straight Swap for Origi, Wilson or Woodburn.

Etheridge is the perfect choice for liverpool, let's be honest hes never going to play unless it's the League cup so he cant really do anything wrong. Liverpool have a huge following in the Philippines and them having a player at liverpool would be huge financially for the club, they could spend £10mill on him and make it back within days on merchandise alone

Do you realise how big the market is in the Philippines? This would be more about money and marketing than them actually wanting him.
Hes not good enough to be anywhere near a top 4 team let alone the European champions.
If he goes I will be suprised if he plays a single 1st team game.

Yes smaller but still huge at over 100million people.
Who said anything about the Chinese market anyway?

Nobody can seriously think that liverpool being interested in a player like Etheridge is anything other than a commercial decision. He is nowhere near good enough for that level but his name will earn a lot of money, it is something we have failed to capitalise on that obviously liverpool have seen the potential in.

That is irrelevant, we do not have the pulling power or fan base a club like liverpool have. If liverpool have a Philippine national player playing for them the country would go nuts to see one of there own playing at the highest level for one of the biggest clubs in the world.
Even though hes a average player his name on that shirt is worth a hell of a lot of money.

It's the same reason teams in America and China can offer stupid money to our over the hill stars. All about the money they make afterwards not wether the player is good enough anymore.

so Jurgen Klopp and the European champions preferring poorer players that can sell some extra shirts over better players that wouldn't sell so many makes more sense to you than maybe you being totally wrong ?

He wont play a minute of premier league football, karius will be ahead of him when he returns and Etheridge will be shipped out on loan to Tranmere Rovers within 2 years ( his level ).
Liverpool financially would have done very well out of the deal though by then

lets get this right 10 mill for a keeper you have no intention of ever playing because he is lge1 standard is good business because hundreds of thousands of people the other side of the world are going to buy Liverpool GOALKEEPER tops with a name on the back of a player that they will never see play for Liverpool .?
sounds a hell of a plan to me..
