The 3-point plan Warnock must execute to excel at Cardiff City next season

By Josh Cole

Tuesday 4th June 2019

Despite putting up a valiant effort in their quest to prolong their stay in the Premier League, Cardiff City ultimately finished two points adrift of 17th-place Brighton & Hove Albion and thus were relegated last month.

Yet whereas it would be easy to be negative about the Bluebirds’ prospects for next season given their recent downturn in fortunes, there is no reason why they cannot thrive in the Championship if they take the right steps this summer.

With the hugely experienced Neil Warnock set to remain as manager at the club, it is imperative that he follows this 3-point plan to give his side the best chance of excelling in the 2019/20 campaign.

Build around Bobby Reid

Although it is safe to say that Bobby Reid has failed to hit the heights that were expected of him when he joined Cardiff from Bristol City last year, a drop down in level could finally see him flourish for the Welsh club.

Undeniably talented, the 26-year-old fired in an impressive total of 19 goals during his most recent Championship campaign and could replicate this form if Warnock decides to build a team that directly benefits his strengths as a player.

Sign a creative midfielder

With Victor Camarasa’s loan deal from Real Betis set to expire at the end of June (via Transfermarkt), the Bluebirds should be making it a priority to sign a creative midfielder this summer.

Despite having exciting options at his disposal both on the wing and up-front, Warnock would undoubtedly be creating the recipe needed for success in the second tier by bringing in a player who is capable of changing a game in an instant.

Stick by his game-plan

After failing to secure survival last season, it would be understandable if Warnock decides to freshen things up by altering his style of play over the coming months.

Yet by doing just that, the 70-year-old would be abandoning a system which was incredibly successful during the 2017/18 campaign which culminated in Cardiff securing promotion to the Premier League.

Although some minor tweaks should be made, there is no reason why Warnock cannot replicate this feat next season by sticking with the status quo.

Arent these 3 points kind of contradicting each other?

Build around Bobby Reid
- Totally agree

Sign a creative midfielder
Unless Warnock can find a creative midfield who works hard and is very strong defensively then he wont play him and Reid. He refers to a player like Camarasa who was the reason point 1 didn't happen/we didn't see much of Reid last season

Stick by his game-plan
So that wouldn't be with Reid and a Camarasa type player would it :? nope.

Good point, yes they do!

I like Bobby Reid, I hope Warnock does build around him, but I'm not sure Warnock really does want to do this, time will tell it will be another interesting window and coming season?

Some on this Forum far better qualified (in their heads at least) to do that, Paul_85  :laughing6:

Personally, I think Bobby Reid was underused last season, so we don't really know; but I do think he will be a star next season, if used correctly

Just needs a season like the one he had for Bristol City before we bought him.

Very good point. It would have been a much better article if it was aimed at building the team around Bobby Reid and didn't mention the other two points which as you point out cause contradictions.

Everything ive seen of Reid this season I don't have any doubt he should be starting as our number 10 next season and will make a success of it given the chance.
