I thought the whole point of having Smithies was to have a really good back up? Ready to take over at no 1 if there was lack of form or injuries.

My thoughts exactly.

I've said time and time again what a poor summer we had transfer wise last season and this puts another 3/4m down the drain.

If I was Tan is really think hard before giving Warnock any money this summer.

The list of players signed, and some for a lot of money to us, and then given little or no game time, then farmed out on loan is getting longer. It doesn't make any sense to me.

Seems absolutely bizzare and he's hardly one for the future at 29 with the emergence of young goalkeepers these days.

I was told back a couple of weeks ago We have a young keeper 18-19 years old who Andy Dibble rates as the best prospect he has ever worked with and if we don't fast track him into the 1st team squad we will end up losing him.
Don't ask me his name i don't know much about the reserve sides maybe somebody that does may be able to back this story up.

We need Smithies as a backup otherwise we will have to go after another keeper, maybe David Marshall?

It wouldn't be George Ratcliffe by any chance? He's 18 and he just won our Academy player of the season, which is some accomplishment when you look at some of the players like Dan Griffiths and Issac Davies who were banging in goals for fun.

If Smithies does go it doesn't make sense. We only have Etheridge and Smithies. Murphy is out of contract so maybe we are going to offer him another year as back up/third choice 'keeper.

Sending Smithies out on loan is strange, surely we should sell him and try and recoup some of last year's £3.5m outlay. The problem comes if Etheridge goes, then we'd have nobody. But maybe we are getting Lee Camp back?? David Marshall anyone.

I agree with the above comment about trusting Warnock with money after his purchases in the last two years. He's great finding a free transfer for a short term fix, but how much have we wasted on MAdine, Cunningham, Smithies and Tomlin....£15m? And £20m on Murphy and Reid who are in one week and out the next.

Getting the wage bill down? I’m guessing he’s on quite a decent wage and is too good to be a Championship back up? He was rarely even on the bench since Christmas. At 29, he’s going to want to go somewhere and play regularly. Don’t know, just speculating

Why not wait and see if we can sell him, what's the rush in loaning him out now. What a waste of money.

Well this makes no sense!! We let him go on loan then lose NE to the prem. we'll end up scraping around and panic buying again!!

I also find this story strange, i think we need to see out it pans out but i find it difficult to believe. I would have thougt firstly we have to fend off bids foe NE, if we can't do that then surely Smithies would become our no 1 keeper for next season?? so why would we want tp loan him out????
