Anthony Joshua Beaten

Sun Jun 02, 2019 5:59 am

Anthony Joshua loses his belts in a stunning stoppage defeat against unfancied challenger Andy Ruiz Jr.

The British heavyweight started slowly as Ruiz Jr took the opening round with a positive display from the bell.

A frantic third round saw Joshua wobbled as both fighters hit the canvas to ignite Madison Square Garden.

Joshua never recovered from that horror round and the fight was dramatically stopped in the seventh round.

He has now relinquished the WBA, WBO and IBF title belts as Mexican produced a massive shock in New York

I said when this fight was announced that Ruiz style would give Joshua a lot of problems because of his size and work on the inside.
I never expected him to actually win though and knock him down 4 times.
Just goes to show you cannot underestimate anybody in the heavyweight division. Tyson Fury want to learn from this aswell because he is looking past Swartze already and he is unbeaten in 24 fights.

I assume that because the rematch is in the UK in November that it will be the Millenium Stadium.
Huge night for Cardiff to showcase itself again

Lets be honest here......Hearn has built up Joshua as a world-beater for marketing reasons only. Fair play theyve made some serious money through that. But Joshua is 'Bruno Plus' at best - and that's why he's been kept away from Fury and Wider...they are on a different planet. The plan has been exposed - but sooner that they expected.

Enjoyed every second tbh.

Joshua is cocky and lauded as a king by the English/ British press (in a similar vain to their football team).

Watching him get put down by a fat Mexican was fab :occasion5:

I have to agree the love in was cringe worthy, especially on shows like league of their own.

Are you sure he was Mexican? Positive I saw him walking through Merthyr town centre the other week.

I disagree, Joshua himself appears a decent kid. Eddie Hearn is a dick of the highest order though and all the hype and marketing he has created is about to crumble.

You can look at it two ways. Either they have bled every possible dollar out of a limited athlete. Or, they have totally mismanaged the athlete as he is under prepared for a 29 year old heavy weight boxer. Ruiz is the same age but has over 50 more rounds under his belt with a far longer amateur career. Deontay Wilder although older has had 42 pro fights compared to AJ's 22.
I think its a bit late in the day for AJ to do a Rocky and go into the woods and come out with faster hands, less lead footed, and able to move his head.

I think the mega fights with Fury (too awkward to hit) and Wilder (too agile) possibly have gone. American PPV is where the serious money is at and not many are going to fork out to see a unlikable Wilder, strange and boring fights Fury and Frank Bruno Mk2.

Hearn thought he could keep milking the cash cow until it became impossible to avoid the big guns and he could garner enough American interest to make it a huge payday.       Its gone.

Well the tables have been turned now that's for sure, Fury and Wilder should only offer to fight him for a 70/30 split of the purse which (allegedly) is what Hearn and the gang have been offering out.

I agree that he seems like a decent bloke, he's been advised and managed badly though imo. Was enjoying following his career but he lost my interest a while ago now.

Massive balls up on his part, but he is a beast, he could knock fury or wilder out with a lucky punch and then it’s game on again.
It will be tough for him though, he’s no calzaghe is he? What joe did in madison square garden to Roy Jones was phenomenal, not only beat him but entertained everyone who was there and millions around the world, on the big stage, when it counted. Can Joshua do it? :old:

I don't blame him, but i don't think he loves it enough.

I would love him to sack his entourage leave Rob McCracken, move to the states to somewhere like Freddie Roachs gym and proves he still wants it.

I just don't think he does.

Beaten by someone with more tyres than kwikfit must be embarrassing.

AJ needs to get that rematch nailed down NOW as I am sure Wilder will be chasing his management to line up Ruiz even if he has to pay off any mandatory fighters to wait so he can get all the belts !!

He got sloppy looking to “sell” himself to US with a big finish after knocking Ruiz down in 3rd but got caught and never recovered!

Sounds like the rematch isn't as simple as Hearn made it sound.

Dillian Whyte is the mandatory for the WBO belt and the WBO want a defence of the belt in September.

Will Ruiz give up the belt in favour of a rematch with Joshua?
