BORO TO LET DOWNING & MIKEL GO FOR FREE

30/05/19

Stewart Downing and John Obi Mikel will become free agents this summer after Middlesbrough decided not to offer the pair new contracts

Downing, 34, has been at Middlesbrough since 2015, re-joining the club he joined as a youth player and spent eight seasons with in the Premier League from 2001-2009.

Former Chelsea player Mikel joined Boro on a short-term deal in the 2019 transfer window

Middlesbrough have also released Dimi Konstantopoulos and Andy Lonergan.

Id take John Obi Mikel, he's been one of Boro's best players since joining them in January. Big, strong and composed on the ball. Pretty sure he was Boro captain by the end of the season.

I'd take them both.

Downing would be ok coming off the bench
Mikel for me ( from what I saw of him last season ) would walk into our midfield in its current state.

We don’t need this type of player.

Old no resale value on big money.

In our set up would you have downing ahead of any of our Wingers?

I wouldn’t, not in the staring 11 however he could play anywhere across the front and has plenty of experience :thumbright:

Our game relies on pace in the wide areas and an ability to get up and down the pitch, can he do it at his age? I'm not sure. Personally I think outside Murphy, NML, Hoilett and Harris would do it.
Maybe as a number 10 but not ahead of Reid. If struggle to see a place on the bench for him personally.

Mikel could certainly do a job fir us but Downing?
He’s overrated imo ...certainly no better than what we got ...not even as good..
We don’t need more wingers but Mikel would be s good fit in the middle of the park.

Hoilett has zero pace to be fair although he is one of the better players I’ve seen in a city shirt.
