The considerable financial advantage Cardiff City and Swansea City have over most of the Championship

By Tom Coleman

Thursday 30th May 2019

Cardiff City and Swansea are among six sides set to be handed a massive financial advantage over most of their Championship rivals next season.

Premier League parachute payments are set to benefit both Welsh teams in the second tier next season, with Cardiff set to receive slightly more over the coming campaign than their bitter local rivals.

Clubs that have spent just one season in the top flight before being relegated, like the Bluebirds, are entitled to two payments over the course of two seasons.

However, clubs that are relegated from the Premier League after more than one season receive three payments over three seasons.

Swansea City were relegated from the Premier League last summer

Swansea were relegated in 2017 along with Stoke City and West Brom, and received £40 million last term.

All three sides are due to pick up £35 million this season and will be entitled to a further payment of £15 million next year.

Meanwhile, Cardiff and Fulham will earn £40 million this season, and £35 million next year, but neither will be entitled to any further payments beyond that, unlike Huddersfield Town, who will be rewarded with another year of payments despite finishing bottom of the Premier League.

As a result, both Welsh sides will have a significant financial upper hand on most of their Championship rivals next season, although it remains to be seen if they can take advantage of that extra cash.

Cardiff City are set to receive a financial advantage over most of their Championship rivals next season

How much Championship clubs will receive in parachute payments this summer

Cardiff £40m*

Fulham £40m*

Huddersfield £40m*

Stoke City £35m**

Swansea City £35m**

West Brom £35m**

* First year parachute payment

** Second year parachute payment

New report from the South Wales Evening Post: Swansea to use parachute payments on new traveller compounds for their fans. Rumoured to be costing £35 million in Townhill, Claise and Bonymaen. Will include state of the art caravans with communal toilets one toilet per 100 Gypos. Jack 'one tooth sister Shagging' Jones said 'this will really improves our lives thanks to the club for this and our American owners who really know what care in the community is we loves em we do'

Unlike yourselves we never needed big money to get into the Premiership, but we did have two proper managers in Rodgers and Laudrup, remember the £2M he paid for Michu.and as I've said previously we lasted 7 years not 7 months.
Your money hasn't got anything to show for it last season. your form was abbismal. It's a fact that if you put Neath or Port Talbot or Barry Town into The Premiership they all would have finished equal to you.

We never needed big money last season to get to the prem, so get your facts right.

As for your 7 years three of them you struggled, and were a joy to watch...lol Also while you were there you signed big earners (unlike us) and is part of your problem now. Your success in the prem got you noticed by the asset stripping yanks, and will be your downfall. :occasion5:

Cardiff still the only Welsh club to be promoted to the prem twice.

By the way, as for Barry, Port Talbot and Neath, they would have been equal to you too when you were relegated.

You get an extra payment if you stayed in the league longer then one season.

Makes sense because there costs would be much higher wouldn’t really give them an advantage.

It hasn’t gone tits up though has it.

We are in a much healthier place now then we have been for probably the last twenty years.

We got relegated we all expected it no big deal.

You on the other hand have been shafted by the people who you used to think were the messiahs of running football clubs.

There only plan was to hold out for as long as possible to get the most money to line there back pockets.

Now your owned by what’s basically an investment company that treats you as a bad investment.

If as you say "We are in a much healthier place now" I take it you mean by that your back in the Championship where you belong. Two unsuccessful attempts to escape from there failed miserably. You lot can all talk the talk but sadly you can't walk the walk. You can't play Championship football in the Premiership, it took your Mrs Doughtfire more than half a season to realise that.

Agreed, you did very well to get promoted. Warnock, love him or loathe him, is a fantastically effective manager at that level. His record speaks for itself. Lots of our fans sneer at the style of play but winning football is winning football. You won’t catch me saying anything about his ability, I have massive respect for him and what he has done in the game.

As for struggling and being a joy to watch for you:-

1st: 11th
2nd: 9th (Carling Cup win)
3rd: 12th (Europa League last 16)
4th: 8th
5th: 12th
6th: 15th
7th: 18th (relegated)

Let’s be honest here. If someone offered you any of those seasons (barring the last one which equaled your best effort at this level) you would have snatched their hand off.

You are in a far better position than us currently however, certainly off the field anyway. Should Tan and Warnock invest wisely and we continue to need to sell, then you will also be in a far better position on the field due to spending minimally last term (although the Sala saga could have further repercussions).

Both clubs will have benefited massively from our respective stints at the top level. I see your training ground has been approved and with ours already built it can only be a good thing for the country to attract better players here and improve them when they are here.

Am I looking forward to the derby next season? Not really, you will be rightful favourites for both matches.

With our two squads currently;
If we played the Jack's tomorrow
I think they would win.

Will wait to end of win to see all the players
The teams lose and who they recruit before
Predictions.

I hate playing them now, how anyone can say we are favourites I find strange.

They almost hit play-offs amid their turmoil.
The team is mostly young and unified and from their u 23s have been top for years.

We need players in quick to retain our unity after losing a complete midfield. Fcuk we need a striker to score goals, win free kicks and hold the ball up.

I don't want to go into another Derby match with a poorer side this season. Let's smash the bastards.

Agreed we would be favourites should we play tomorrow.

But we aren’t, we are very likely to lose some key players, you are likely to strengthen - plus we have managerial uncertainty. There probably has never been a better time to play us, certainly in the last 10 years.

well we have had 2 promotions and 2 relegations ,been in the play offs, lost and regained our colours..
haven't spent as much time in the prem..or changed managers as often but strangely enough have had more watching us.. :o .
so plenty to talk about and more people talking probably makes it more diverse....
