Liverpool eye shock move for ex-Cardiff City goalkeeper David Marshall - reports

By Anthony Woolford

Wednesday 29th May 2019

Former Cardiff City goalkeeper David Marshall is being linked with a shock move to Liverpool should Simon Mignolet leave the Champions League finalists this summer.

Mignolet is reportedly set for a £15million exit from Merseyside, having fallen behind Allison Becker in the Liverpool pecking order.

And, according to the Scottish Sun, ex-Bluebird Marshall is said to have been identified by Reds boss Jurgen Klopp as his replacement for cover.

Scottish international Marshall made 281 appearances for Cardiff after joining from Norwich in the summer of 2007 and established himself as a big fans' favourite.

He spent seven seasons in south Wales, captained the Bluebirds and played outstandingly well in the Premier League before moving to Hull as part of a cost-cutting exercise.

The former Celtic keeper is under contract with Hull until the end of June, before becoming a free agent. The Tigers say they will speak to Marshall in the coming weeks about extending his stay at the KCOM Stadium.

Simon Mignolet could be on his way out
But the lure of a move to Liverpool could be too great with the Premier League runners-up having also signed left-back Andy Robertson from Hull in 2017.

Marhsall was linked with a £5m move to Liverpool in the summer of 2015, with then Reds boss Brendan Rodgers looking to put pressure on number one Mignolet. That move never materialised, but could on this occasion.

Decent back up on modest wages, good move for both parties, probably never play other than the odd cup and if Allison was ever going to be out long term they would re-evaluate. When you look at it, it makes sense?

not exactly the comfortable on the ball sweeper keeper youd expect Klopp to be interested in ...makes zero sense. but its football ?

I think it's the way clubs will go now mate, it's just a gamble, the chances of you're number 1 keeper getting injured are slim so get an average keeper who you can get on the cheap to bridge a gap if needed and if you're number 1 goes out long term replace in the transfer window.

Saves money to invest in the rest of the squad and Marshall probably isn't thar far off Mignolet in all round ability? What you think?

no idea anymore than I do about who we might sign...its who is unhappy where they are at present , who falls into the price bracket they are willing to pay....and who suits their style. its the later where I just do not see it...not really being widely reported either..so we will see. good move for him if it comes off though even if for 1 year it will rise his stock
