Cardiff City's Neil Etheridge discusses future -

Cardiff City goalkeeper Neil Etheridge has made no secret of his desire to play in the Premier League again.

Etheridge looks like he is open to offers if a club from the Premier comes in for him.

Saturday 25th May 2019

The Philippines international was part of the squad that gained promotion into the top flight with the Bluebirds in Neil Warnock's first full campaign in South Wales while he was the star performer during the 2018/19 season.

And following the recent relegation, Etheridge - a reported target for West Ham - has spoken of his ambition to play in the Premier League once again.

"I want to go back to play in the Premier League. I feel it’s where I belong," he told the media in the Philippines.

"To have the opportunity to go back in the Premier League is something I’ll have to consider extremely. I’ll think about it, but ultimately, it’s not my decision.

"Obviously, [Cardiff] has given me the platform to go and play in the Championship and the Premier League. Even the massive disappointment with the club that we got relegated."

"You’re one step away, you’re one injury away, a couple of training sessions away from getting that No. 1 shirt, so there are how many ways you must look at it.

"You sit on the bench in the Premier League for one week, you could be playing for the rest of the season if the No. 1 at that time had a bad game."

Not sure I like the sound of that tbh. Makes me wonder if he's happy to be in the prem even if he's on the bench as he thinks he can break into the first team. Id like to think that he'd give us another season to get back to the prem due to the fact that we give him the platform as he says to play in the Championship and the Premier League when before hand he was looked at as an average GK for Walsall in league 1. I do hope he stays mind.

Let him go then, if we can get anything over 10 million for him then it would be stupid not too, we already have Alex smithies here who if given the number 1 shirt I’m sure we’d see the best out of him, 10 million pound striker could well be on the way if we sell, sure we could grab a real decent striker for that

He has been doing a lot of media in the Philippines so probably wouldn't read to much into it.

Personally if we had an offer of 10m+ I would let him go anyway. His value is at its peak for us now and I think we have other positions we could strengthen with that money.

He’s a good keeper but still learning his trade. Excellent shot stopper but his kicking is anything but confident. I think he will remember that he can from the lower division and only because of Warnock and co has he been allowed to flourish. Hope he stays, but if it’s a Premier League Bench and paycheck he is craving then they should let him go for the right money

Replaceable. Take anything over 8 million as long as the money goes towards improving the team. Smithies is adequate at championship level.

Hes absolutely brilliant and I hope to God he doesn't go. Any team with ambitions need a good spine in their team. A good goalkeeper, central defender, midfielder and striker are vital. You can fill up the rest of the team

as long as it goes to...............attempting to improve the team ..which often doesn't work out
so as a Cardsiff fan i would keep the better ones..and hope the other 23 clubs that i dont suport sell their better players...

I'd snap the hand off any club who offered £5mill for him

He is a bang average keeper and easily replaceable. We already have a replacement in Smithies anyway.
Massively overrated by our fans, i cant see any club coming in for him at the prices mentioned there are much better keepers if you want to pay that money

Really ?

Hes a good shot stopper but that is about it.
His distribution is shocking, his kicking is awful, He struggles under high balls and he lacks any real command of his area which is why Bamba and Morrison are always arguing with him.

Sell the guy if he isn,t showing any loyalty to the club bye way of manufacturing a move to prem via the media.
The money is clearley needed for top striker and midfield sell sell sell

Extremely disappointing comments, no problem with him going but dont engineer it via the media.
Expect to see more agent talk in the coming weeks.
Remember where you were 18 months ago !

Agree I think Warnock will be hugely dissapointed with this interview.

Good keeper who has done a good job but sounds like his heart ain’t at the city anymore...the way Fabs has been playing he’s gonna be getting a sore arse on the bench......if we can get the money and use it for a 20 goal striker then it will be good business...we got good championship level cover ....

His head has obviously been turned , we need players who are committed to the club, so we should move him on quickly.

Hang on, literally a week ago there was a poll and people voted Etheridge better than Marshall. Now he's said he'd like to play in the premier League again (shocker) and people are calling him bang average and to let him go for £5m? He said he'd consider offers if they came in. I don't blame him and I'd love to see him stay as he kept us in most games in the premier League and with out him I reckon we would have been relegated much sooner

As much as I think we all like Neil, he's been great this season and saved us a few points I'm sure. But I don't think he's anything special, his shot stopping is good, but his communication with his defence is poor, how many times were there mix ups because he either didn't call for the ball, or defenders weren't confident he's make it? I also don't think he takes crosses as well as he should, and we all know his kicking out is dire. If we can get £10 million for him, that would be fantastic and as people say, we've got a ready made replacement in Smithies. And I'm pretty sure there's loads of good keepers in the lower leagues that we could get a decent no2 keeper from. Take the money, and get a good striker and a midfield general. :ayatollah:

If he's on a contract we must make him honour it and consider dropping him if he isn't trying after that.
If it costs us a lot of money so be it, but it's the only way to nip an exodus in the bud.

There are few competent premiership players available for reasonable fees in the window and all our best players could be targets for mid table or newly promoted clubs. We cannot afford to lose four or five players if we intend to be promoted straight back and it should be made clear that we're buying not selling.

Obviously we can get rid of certain players who don't realistically figure in future plans and this will raise some cash, but this is not the time for experimenting with new players or we'll sink back into championship ways

Disapointed by this, especially the bit about being on the bench- but for people on this forum to say he is average and overrated is baffling. At Old Trafford he was top class making three really good saves but more importantly dealing with ease everything they threw at him . He looked in complete command. He has matured amazingly.

I would like him to stay but not too worried if he doesn't as long as we invest, but in this inflated market talk of £10 million is too low. Stoke want £35 million for Buckland. I am not saying we can get anywhere near that but cant believe talk on this forum of £5 to £8 million.

Players come and go. If he wants to go, sell and make a excellent profit. He is overrated, as in the PL he was always busy, in the spotlight, at a relegated team and made good saves. So naturally there would be some interest. Same happened the Marshall. Smithies is suppose to be good?

I agree that performance at old trafford was top draw..one of many this season..
not sure about the quotes from him tbh..if you change ill for id..it don't sound nearly as bad especially if being asked ..

to have the opportunity to go back is something id have to consider....id think about it....but ultimately its not my decision.

its something I would imagine all our players might say if being honest..and he talks about ourselves giving him a chance as well as the bench stuff...sounds like a young man just talking openly and honestly about things to be considered if our club did accept an offer..

as for the 5mill...  ..that's just that thomasblue bloke, he doesn't like etheridge full stop

I wouldnt say I dont like him , I think he is a decent keeper I just fo f think he is premier league class. He is a average Championship keeper no more no less . He pulls off some great saves but at the same time he concedes silly goals especially at his near post because of his positioning is poor.

If you can explain to me why he is worth more than £5mill without Cardiff blinkers on then I could change my mind. Our fans like him because he plays for us, if he had played like he has for a rival and we wanted to sign him for £5mill everybody would say it's a lot for a keeper who has had 1 good season in 10 years st a decent level British football.
