RIP

I can't even begin to imagine. Just looking at those photos is hard god knows how those there must have felt.

A truly sad day.

That game should have been a celebration (Bradford City FC had won the Third Division title) but catalogue of disasters that led to another massive loss of life at a football match

Those who ran on to the pitch were the lucky ones, as those who left by via other supposed access/egress routes became embroiled in the major catastrophe that unfolded

Not a great time for football in general in a year that also suffered the disaster at The Heysel Stadium

RIP everyone involved in both tragedies

Through a friend I met a resident who lived right next door to VP when the fire happened. They used his house as a treatment base for survivors. I actually went to the house which was in South Parade if I remember rightly (this was in 1999). His story of what happened that day was horrific.

I often think the Bradford fire gets a little overlooked when compared to other stadium disasters like Hillsborough, Ibrox and Heysel. They were also terrible disasters and a pointless loss of life, but for sheer terror and brutality being burnt to death is worse than anything I can imagine.

I have often wondered about Ninian Park in the old days. The Grange End was covered and the floor was wooden beams. I remember thinking are we all going to fall through this when we started singing and jumping up and down :o

I can also remember discarding rubbish which fell through the wooden flooring and would have piled up underneath. If I remember rightly this is exactly what caused the Bradford fire when rubbish was ignited by a discarded cigarette.

Tony, before the Health and Safety at Work Act in 1974 there was little or no governance on such things and that more tragedies of a similar ilk didn't happen is more down to luck than any prescribed preventative plan

The old covered Grange End (as you said, effectively wooden sleepers with gaps between them) was as potentially dangerous as any other in the country and the result from the above and other Acts eventually saw its closure and the relatively (but safer) concrete open stand being constructed

Thankfully, modern stadia take all eventualities into account and with their construction and safety procedures are far far safer environments in which to watch sport

There's a thing on BT Sport called One day on May.

we were away to Wimbledon that day all the usual faces there , a great day even though they sent us down and was shocked when i got home and heard the news , no social media in those days so no one would of heard of the tragedy until we got back.
Also on that day a fan lost his life in violent scenes at the brum v leeds match.
