Friday 3rd May 2019

The main points

Bobby Reid been unlucky not to start more due to Victor Camarasa

Josh Murphy training better - learnt lesson that he can’t just “turn up on a Saturday”

Idea Cardiff were cautious against Fulham “rubbish”

This is the biggest weekend of the season for Cardiff City, City have to win no matter what otherwise they are relegated.
Plus Brighton must not win, if they do Cardiff are relagated anyway.

Brighton - feel sympathy if you send them down?

Neil Warnock:

“Ask me after we’ve won these two games!”

Mindset?

NEIL WARNOCK:

“We’ve got to win this game. If we don’t we can forget it, so we’ve got to concentrate on that really. Away from home they probably play the best football from home. When I was there we signed Wilfried Zaha and that was really good for the club. He’ll probably go on to a top club in the next few years. He’s the best player on the pitch on Saturday. We’ve got to hope we can cope with that and our forwards can create chances.”

NEIL WARNOCK:

Fine from FA - how are you feeling?

“I don’t think there’s any point in taking things any further. I have to take it on the chin. I was disappointed in the first two charges, I don’t think they warranted being found guilty. I can understand where they were coming from with Sharon’s comments, because you can’t condone violence towards referees.

“When you get an institution as big as the FA I find it disappointing that they have to bring in an outside barrister.

“But we live to fight another day.”

Does this stop you speaking your mind?

“Everything’s changed. The scope of things you can’t say is pretty much everything. They probably want robot managers or managers that don’t speak English. The humour’s gone from the game.”

2 wins from now would be worth £20k?

“We have to beat Palace first. We can’t look at anything else. It would be nice to go to Old Trafford needing something rather than just for a day out.”

NEIL WARNOCK:

Was Fulham a killer blow?

“We should’ve got a result. I was disappointed with the first half in particular. I thought we could get on the front foot and it didn’t materialise.

“I did say it was team selection but it was probably the odd one selection.”

Palace's away form?

“I think they’re geared for it. They’ve got a strong side at the back, they’re good in midfield - I signed a few of them! They’ve got that ability to break quickly.”

Mental strength from players?

“We seem to be like this every other week. I don’t think mental issues come into it too much with us. We always give effort and sometimes we are a bit limited. But with two games to go we’re still in it.

“At the commission we showed around 13 incidents that went against us. You don’t just need to play well, you need a bit of luck.

“I don’t think they have any sympathy whatsoever. They might look at this interview in half hour’s time to see if there’s anything untoward.”

NEIL WARNOCK:

"It's not so much shock at being found guilty as disappointment, to be honest with you."

"The FA have taken action against me, yet nothing more is said about the decisions made in that match."

"I had over 100 letters from throughout the country supporting me."

"I'm disappointed and deflated, but at least there's no touchline ban which is a plus."

He joked: "I might skip the next two press conferences."

Re: NEIL WARNOCK:

Neil Warnock said Josh Murphy's exclusion from the squad was down to the winger's poor showings in training, with the decision to leave him out placed under increased scrutiny following Cardiff's toothless attacking showing in West London.

Warnock said: "He's been poor in training. No excuse."

"I could have said he had something creaking in his back or something, couldn't I? But he's been poor in training."

"I hope it gives him a kick up the backside and he's better in training next week."

Crystal Palace and Burnley have got their eye on Cardiff City's Josh Murphy should the Bluebirds get relegated from the Premier League, according to reports.

The wideman became Cardiff's first signing of last summer in an £11m move from Norwich City when he signed a four-year deal to move from the Championship to the top flight.

Murphy, 24, is widely regarded as one of Cardiff's better forward options, and has made 27 Premier League appearances for the Bluebirds this season - seven from the bench - scoring three goals and producing one assist in that time.

Now, Football Insider reports that Crystal Palace and Burnley have set their sights on the winger and are ready to make a move if the Bluebirds go down.

Change in attitude?

“Not really. For whatever reason they were apprehensive. We didn’t go out to be cautious. That’s rubbish. We set out to get at them but it didn’t materialise and a couple of players were disappointing on the day.“

Changes made at Fulham - How much more can you do? More to come?

“I think so. It’s difficult because you try to find places for players you feel you can’t leave out. One or two have shown they can’t do every job. With two games to go we’ve not got anything to lose. I don’t want us to be tepid I want us to have a go.”

Zaha signing at Palace?

“He wasn’t in a good place. I met him in the chairman’s office and I’d had half an hour with him. He felt let down by Man United and I could understand why. He was a young lad and he needed an arm round the shoulder. But he’s always had tremendous skill and I’m sure he will go to one of the top clubs in Europe.”

Future if you go down?

“I don’t see a lot of change. I was there yesterday and someone mentioned ‘oh someone’s making a £20m offer for Neil Etheridge gaffer. What do you think?’

“I said ‘I’d put him in my car and drive him there’.

“Any good offers for our players would be considered. If worst comes to worst and we went down you have to make a couple of changes. But if we stay up there will be nobody leaving unless we want them to go.”

Injury blow for Crystal Palace as key man is set to miss Cardiff City clash

Thursday 02nd May 2019

Crystal Palace are likely to be without Christian Benteke for their game against Cardiff City this weekend, Roy Hodgson has confirmed.

The Belgian striker is a doubt for the game after taking a blow to his cheekbone, which has forced him to miss training this week.

And Hodgson said that it is unlikely that the Palace striker will be able to face the Bluebirds on Saturday, although he has not yet ruled him out.

ROY HODGSON:

"We've picked up one [injury]. Unfortunately Christian Benteke took a nasty blow to the head 10 or 15 minutes before the end of the game with [Everton's] Michael Keane so he’s suffering from that blow," Hodgson said at his pre-match press conference.

"We’ll see how it goes but he's very unlikely for Saturday. We haven’t ruled him out for next week [against Bournemouth]. He's damaged his cheekbone which has needed treatment that has kept him out of training this week."

Benteke has had a frustrating season, with the Belgian dogged by injury problems for much of the campaign.

He did, however, recently score his first goal of the season in Palace's 3-2 win at Arsenal which secured their safety in the Premier League.

But he is now set to join the list of players missing for the trip to south Wales on Saturday, along with long-term absentees Mamadou Sakho, James Tomkins, Jeffrey Schlupp and Pape Souare.

"Apart from Christian I've got a lot to choose from apart from those we talk about every week," said Hodgson.

Mamadou Sakho, James Tomkins, Jeffrey Schlupp and Pape Souare will therefore remain absent until the end of the season.

Bobby Reid?

Neil Warnock:

“He’s unlucky really because his best position is where I’m playing Victor, and my argument would be that at times it’s easy for people on the outside, but we felt that Victor’s role there had been more instrumental in picking up results.

“When we’ve played Victor as part of a two we’ve been under the cosh a bit, so it’s not worked out. You could play Victor wide, but is he better wide than the players we have. I don’t think so.

“Bobby’s been unlucky really.”

Does speculation over players leaving risk being a distraction?

NEIL WARNOCK:

“Not for this lot no. If you were a bit higher up, but not this lot. The lads would soon be put in their place if they started talking about this that and the other. I would mention that one or two third division clubs will be interested!”
