Why Cardiff City boss Neil Warnock refused to pick Josh Murphy

Some very frank words from the Bluebirds boss

Monday 29th April 2019

Neil Warnock says Josh Murphy's exclusion from his Cardiff City squad for their crucial clash at Fulham was due to the winger's poor showings in training this week.

Murphy, widely regarded as one of City's better forward options, was left out of Warnock's matchday squad for the trip to Craven Cottage as the Bluebirds saw their hopes of Premier League survival take a significant hit after going down to Ryan Babel's second-half stunner.

The decision to leave out the winger was placed under increased scrutiny following Cardiff's toothless attacking showing in West London, but Warnock insists the former Norwich City star hadn't done enough to earn himself a place in his thoughts.

NEIL WARNOCK:

"He's been poor in training. No excuse," a frank Warnock explained after the game.

"I could have said he had something creaking in his back or something, couldn't I? But he's been poor in training.

"I hope it gives him a kick up the backside and he's better in training next week."

Warnock also explained that striker Kenneth Zohore's absence was down to an injury niggle, but was left impressed by the contribution of Danny Ward from the bench.

"He was fabulous. He was like that in training and Ken had some tightness in his quad, so I said 'let's put Danny in, he's flying', so was Rhys Healey.

"They were the best two lads in training this week. I reward the lads who do it in training now."

There was once again a sniff of controversy at Craven Cottage, with Cardiff seeing strong shouts for a penalty turned down either side of half-time, but Warnock has played down any criticism of referee Chris Kavanagh, despite claiming that his side may have still deserved a spot kick.

"I thought, for a change, he was as good a referee as we’ve had this year," he added. "I think he missed a penalty early doors. Mitrovic on Morrison, which he does every time we play Fulham.

"But it’s difficult to understand that.

"The fourth official said he didn’t think there was much in it but I asked him ‘how would he win a header, with both hands wrapped round him like that?’

"So I haven’t really got a clue what the answer is."

Josh wanting a move back to Norwich maybe?

Let him go back to Norwich, has had more chances than any of our other summer signings and generally been poor with odd touch of potential. Has no work ethic on the pitch so not surprised he can’t motivate himself in training.

Burnley away as poor a performance I have seen in a City shirt for a long time.

Young lad huge potential but not prepared to work hard it seems.

Despite the result at Fulham I have to back Warnock on this. Murphy has shown flashes of real potential but he's also been poor in large parts, while his work ethic, and defensive abilities are questionable. If he's not putting it in at such a key stage of the season then we are better without him. And to be fair to Healey and Ward they were both execllent when they came on, and we look much improved!

To be honest I don’t like the recent trend Warnock has of publicly criticising players for what happens at training. Maybe he thinks it’s motivation but I have never liked it and never will. Some things, for the good of the team, are best left unsaid and on the training ground.

Ward looked good, Healy not so much.

I'm with Warnock. He clearly makes his standards known to his players. He did the same to NML!

Murphy needs to pull his finger out and get on with it, if he has a problem with anything Warnock says then a positive reaction is what he's after, if he cries off then he's not a Cardiff City type of player!

First Warnock blames his poor team selection again ! and then he blames his players,I think he’s out of ideas and needs to go, yes Warnock is likeable and a funny character, but that’s not enough for me. It’s time he retired. There are better managers out there, despite what Warnock says. We need a manager with vision and ambition and for me it’s not Warnock.

the grass isn't always greener although you do seem to have found some that's stronger.

You need discipline, if he doesn't work hard enough he doesn't play if he doesn't learn he can go away !!!

Fergies moto was the same !!

I know this might be reading too much into it or whatever but on Murphy’s social media, he seems to stay in contact with ex-teammates such as Angus Gunn and James Maddison - I’m assuming from his time at Norwich and that’s fine but he doesn’t seem to have much to do with his current teammates. Does he maybe not get along with our players and that’s why he won’t work hard? I’m probably wrong and this is a shot in the dark but it’s definitely something I’ve noticed
