‘ £40m+?? ‘

Sun Apr 28, 2019 1:00 am

Warnock's most expensive signings since being at the club.

Alex Smithies - 4m
Greg Cunningham - 3m
Leandro Bacuna - 4m
Bobby Reid - 10m
Josh Murphy - 12m
Lee Tomlin - 2m
Gary Madine - 6m

How much do you reckon they're all worth now? Most of them are either not good enough to get in our first team or they sit on the bench. Something drastically needs to be done in regards to our scouting and transfer policy.

Re: 40m+??

The transfer policies,,, and procedures at our club have been little short of a disaster for years now,,, and still lessons have not been learned,,, time after time after time. Norwich City have just been promoted, so congratulations to them, but they did so, I read, with an emphasis on a “creative” transfer policy, due to financial constraints. As a good result they brought in players like Pukki on a free transfer,,, and twenty eight goals later,,,, that’s the kind of policy we desperately needed!

Re: 40m+??

Although I agree money could have been better spent, the counter to this argument is this that he also signed Hoilet, Bamba, Etheridge and Mendez- Lang for nothing or very little. Etheridge is best bargain signing the club has made in years.

Re: 40m+??

Sun Apr 28, 2019 8:27 am

All clubs have mixed bag when it comes to signings! Our problem could be the team selection as we've played same system for the whole season which as we all know as failed time and time again and yet we have players sighned but very rarely used even as subs........

Most still worth what we paid.

Counter that with our 10 million pound keeper we got for pennies. NML and Hoilett also pennies. Zahore who under NW showed he could be worth more.

He’s done wonders for us.

You only have to look at some of the dross Alex Ferguson bought , it happens even to the best out there

But Healey brought on before Reid still baffles me

you could right a similar article about any club , infact most would look a lot lot worse..

Re: 40m+??

Mon Apr 29, 2019 7:12 am

It also looks worse to us because we've not got our fingers on the pulse of how the transfer market inflates year on year. The £4m of today is the £2m of a few years ago and the £1m of 7/8 years ago.

Re: 40m+??

Mon Apr 29, 2019 8:25 am

Surely the transfer policy has to be give NW as little money as possible then?

Both January buys and which are over priced and a limited pool of players.
Reid and Murphy could prove their worth this season ???
Although in fairness don't seem like Warnock battler type players?

And Paterson for £400k ... and a batch of new contracts for existing players over the past 2 summers, including Bruno who looked like he was on the way out. There may have been some signing and agent fees involved, but we could easily have lost 4-5 key players and had to find major transfer fees to replace them. Like all managers and clubs there are some duds (and some big money players who don't get picked - but we are not alone there) but overall Neil Warnock is well in credit.

Re: 40m+??

anyone reading this thread from any club in the top 2 divisions must be literally crying laughing at how small time some of our fans are...40mill spread over 7 players ffs..

Re: ‘ £40m+?? ‘

Mon Apr 29, 2019 7:32 pm

Warnock has worked miracles in the transfer market. We simply can't compete with other Premier League clubs in terms of fees or wages.
He's got Bamba, Hoilett, Etheridge, Mendez-Laing and Paterson(compensation) on frees and Arter and Camarasa on loan.
Reid and Murphy are still worth £10 million each and as far as I can see, the only poor signing has been Madine for £6 million.
Bournemouth paid £15 million for Ibe and £20 million for Solanke!! They hardly play, but no-one's complaining because they stayed up.
When you are paying 'only' £10 million for a player at this level it's a gamble.

Not to pick holes but:

Smithies is a keeper aged 29...do you expect his value to go up as he approaches 30????

Cunningham - according to transfer market he'd currently fetch £3.5 million so we've made.

Bacuna was bought for £3million not £4million and I think as a utility player since January he's been worth it.

Reid bought for £10million, nobody blinked an eyelid when that was announced. I think we'd get that for him in current market but I wouldn't sell him anyway.

Josh Murphy thought to be £11million not £12million. Again wouldn't sell him anyway.

Lee Tomlin is what?30 now you expect his value to rise at that age??

Gary Madine was 5 million not 6million, he had just netted 10 goals in 28 appearances and looked worth it. Again given age are you expecting his value to rise.

Now given the above I'm sure you'll agree your attempt to paint Warnock in a negative light was pretty poor. Must try harder.

It matters not.. he’s brought in £170M. Or so..

Im not sure u quite get my point. Im trying to show that Warnock's most expensive transfers haven't worked out. Tell me how many of those combined 40m signings were in our starting 11 against Fulham? 1. I think the job Warnock has done has been fantastic and he's got a great record when it comes to free's and loans, however unlike some I don't look at him like a demi-god or a messiah. And for the record i reckon he should stay next season but im pointing out that his most expensive signings that he's made at this club have ether been flops or he doesn't pick them.

Re: ‘ £40m+?? ‘

Mon Apr 29, 2019 10:01 pm

The most disappointing thing to me was in the quality we brought in, we paid good money on chancers and sadly apart from the two loan signings none of them have stepped up to the mark. Pity because with that little bit more quality we wouldn't be facing relegation.

Who's this imaginary £10 mill keeper then ? Why hasn't he played all season ?

If your talking about Ethridge try taking a 0 off that 10 and you will be closer to his real worth

He was building a squad not a first 11, Bacuna, Smithies and Cunningham from day one were never first choice players and that was known.

I just dont buy into this love in for him.
He is a good championship goalkeeper, he is nowhere near a £10 mill keeper. He has too many flaws in his game to be considered a top premier league goalkeeper.
As I've put on here before there are probably 20 keepers in the premier league who are better.

In reality compared to some of our past keepers he is pretty poor hes just pulled off some good saves which mask his failings.

The easier question is who in the championship is worth that amount ?

Nobody

Smithies is a very well regarded goalkeeper at that standard but we overpaid for him.
Other keepers in that league include:

Jack Butland
Scott Carson
Kieron Westwood
David Marshall
David Stockdale
Adam Federici

None are or have ever been a £10mill keeper and all are better all round keepers than Etheridge in my opinion. Stoke want huge money for Butland but they ate just playing the game and dont want to sell.
The truth is people are over rating him because he is the keeper who took us up, dont forget it was less than 12 months ago he lost his place to Brian Murphy. He has done well but is nowhere near premier league standard and if we stay up we should look to replace him, he has made a few great saves this season but counters that with letting in soft goals down to his poor positioning. ( especially at his near post )

jeez...Butland cost 3.5 million 6 years ago and is still only 26.
Westwood has only recently been recalled at SWFC.

and three of those are not even 1st choice at their clubs..in fact one of those 3 was so indispensable he is out on loan in lge1 where he isn't 1st choice either,,

this is worse than the summer list you made.

Re: ‘ £40m+?? ‘

Reid and Murphy would hold their value, they just need a good run to show their form. Plus they are competing with NML and Hoilett which were bargains and keeping them on their toes for a start in the team. So for me they aren't bad signings.
