BREAKING NEWS

Bolton's game against Brentford on Saturday has been called off by the English Football League after Bolton's players said they would not play until they receive the wages they are owed.

The match was called off 16 hours before it was scheduled to kick off.

All of the March wages owed to the Wanderers' players have yet to be paid.

"As a result of these disappointing developments, the league has been forced to suspend Saturday's fixture," an EFL statement said.

"The club [Bolton] is now deemed to be guilty of misconduct and will be referred to an Independent Disciplinary Commission.

"The EFL Board will now consider the matter of determining whether the fixture will be played or not."

Agreed.

Probably a significant figure as well, and it’ll probably be deducted for next season in League One. They could deduct something like 30 points, like they’ve done in the past, which would make it likely that Bolton would end up in League Two in 2020.

Amazing to think they were close to Champions League under Allardyce, who only left because the board “didn’t want” Champions League football.

The FA will come down on Bolton like a ton of bricks for this. Large points deduction and a fine. A sad state of affairs!

Big history Bolton 73 seasons in the top division.

It's unfair to punish the club and future team.

It is the owner who should be personally taking the fine. A points deduction next season would likely kill the club and possibly fold it.

This Anderson guy is at fault not the fans , players and staff who in reality are the ones who ate going to be punished in the long run.

Unfortunately I can see this happening in the future to other clubs the way money is circulating in football these days I'm afraid it's only a matter of time before a massive bubble burst

Unfortunately clubs are no longer the ownership if fans, they are nothing more than businesses, businesses acting outside of normal business rules.

I know this is on going but surely players could have given owner ultimatum about striking.? What are efl doing about it as they've known about situation for months...

The point I'm trying to make is that in circumstances like this where the owner is not paying wages , there should be a rule of ownership that any fine eminating from non payment of wages to players should be to the Owner personally not the club.
Why should the new owner a d everyone else be punished next season for a previous owners greed?

This is sad but not unexpected and the players are probably right to do what they have. I know most ion us would down tools, if we hadn't been paid for months, despite promises

But for football, this is different and the outcome needs to be carefully considered...

Should Bolton now be docked points?

Should they been thrown out of the League?

Should the game be played at a later date?

I'm not sure tbh, but the fact now is that this will have far reaching implications for Bolton as a club and for the EFL when the precedents are set over the coming days :(

Personally I see it as a business these days nothing more, if the owners haven't paid staff wind the business up. Simple.

Football clubs get away with murder in business terms, it has to stop.

Latest news is that efl have said they must play final 2 games even if it means using under 18 team!

I understand your point and agree with a nearly all of the sentiment but if the Chairman became liable it could play havoc with the rules and fixture lists. Remember when Derby called that game off against us because of the snow? They had injured players out at the time and it suited them not to play that game.

With your suggestion similar could happen as a Chairman could invent a problem with wages blaming an IT system the players could call a strike and a game which that club didn't fancy playing because of an injury crisis would be called off. The Chairman is fined a couple of hundred thousand pounds which he will no doubt collect back off the club.

The problem is well intended rules can have unwanted consequences.

I can see Bolton being hammered by the EFL if that happens. The integrity of the league will be compromised as the final games will be played against a much weakened Bolton side rather than a full strength team. I don't know their fixtures but if any of the results affect promotion relegation or play off places then all hell could break loose.

I totally agree with you. Trouble is it doesn't take much for fans to start complaining. Run a club properly and within budget and it won't be long before you hear fans moaning about lack of ambition and why don't the club open the purse strings etc.

I can remember fans being bemused because we wouldn't give Peter Whittingham a £20kpw contract at the age of 34 and no doubt the same will happen with Gunnars.

Players are at Cardiff for the money and nothing else. We have to start to understanding that and redressing the balance. Never again should we ever be taking a Robbie Fowler or JFH onto the payroll, it has to be young hungry players with a point to prove and who come with a reasonable wage. Preferably the young players would come from our academy but that is another story!
