Neil Warnock mocks Liverpool's Mo Salah after 'dive'

Monday 22nd April 2019

Cardiff City boss Neil Warnock has accused Liverpool's Mo Salah of diving to win the penalty that helped seal Liverpool's 2-0 win.

Referee Martin Atkinson penalised Sean Morrison in the 81st minute after the Cardiff skipper was deemed to have manhandled the striker to the ground.

Replays showed Morrison did make contact with Salah, but the Egyptian did appear to go to ground rather easily.

And Warnock was typically forthright following the match, telling Sky Sports:

NEIL WARNOCK:

"I think we have done really well. We are playing against a team really without a weakness. They have quality all around the field.

"We played when we could on the front foot. We are disappointed with a few things.

"There was a linesman flagging in the first half and he clearly punished us when Van Dijk was playing him on.

"Then we have a silly penalty like that. He had his arms around him but he didn't have to give that. The last bit of the penalty shout was like a great 9.9 dive.

"Andy Robertson pulled Morrison (in a separate incident). He knew he was going to beat him on the back post. It's good defending if you can get away with that.

"Morrison has been pulled from top to toe this season and has had his shirt ripped off a couple of times. I don't think he's ever had a penalty. When you see them given as easily as that (Liverpool’s one). "

The Bluebirds are three points behind relegation rivals Brighton heading into their final three matches following the defeat.

They had managed to hold Liverpool until the second half before Georginio Wijnaldum broke the deadlock and James Milner converted the controversial penalty.

Salah will rightly never be seen as a great player when cheating is such a big part of his game. Even Ronaldo had the sense to stop diving. I really hope MC win the league

Odd one really. It was a dive and a penalty. Morrisons arms all over him and although restricting his movement in no way did it contribute to Salah going to ground. That was all theatre. So should Morrison have gone to ground when impeded at the other end. Probably.

But would we have been awarded that as a penalty ... Probably not.

100% a penalty I’m afraid.
Morrison was stupid.

I don't think many disagree. It's the manner which Salah exaggerated his dive that has pissed people off.

I never think a penalty should be 'won' it should be awarded when a cynical foul has denied a goalscoring opportunity. Unfortunately, Morrison was silly enough to fall in to Salah's trap.

I agree with you but it’s been going on for decades. I hate it but Morrison should never have given him the excuse.

for the majority of time ive watched/played/been involved in football that would not have been a penalty. Morrison was very tight and his arms were at times draped over or around the diver but he didn't pull him or drag him over..
so ok the rules have changed that the slightest of contact is now judged to be an infringement..thats fair enough if its applied equally in both areas and in all games..its not..and we have been brained washed by pundits who have also been brainwashed themselves in to this defo a pen thing..and the many very similar that are not given disappear .

was Salah clever ? he clearly dived theatrically and is a serial diver..

Of course he was clever because he won the penalty convincing the ref.
In today’s football that’s a penalty all day long and I have no complaints.

cheating =- clever.. sorry dont buy into this at all.and the sooner the better everyone stops buying this rubbish..its CHEATING and this particular cheat does it all the time..
if its a rule apply it properly..sorry but im flat out Cardiff and we dont get these nonsense pathetic cheat penalties someone would have to attack morrison with a machete for us to get one so how can it be all day long ?

I will agree that Morrison was naive and these established premier league players know how to play the officials, but neither did he throw him to the floor. They know how far they can push, and what they can get away with, whether it's in an attacking or defending phase. If we stay in this league, we will have to learn these "rules". What annoys me most though is the so called pundits and ex players saying "well he felt contact, so he had every right to go down". Is this what football has come to?

In my first post I put the word ‘clever’ in the inverted comma thing. Which means I, personally, don’t think he’s clever.
I agree with you he’s a cheat as are a few well known players like Bale, Kane etc, etc. Players have bean cheating ever seen people like Francis Lee back in the 70’s but it’s just got worse and worse over the years and whilst referees have got better at it, it obviously still exists. I dislike it it as well.
Yes, the final fling to the floor was pathetic but it was a penalty to Liverpool regardless. Morrison was naive in the extreme.

We don’t get these “nonsense pathetic cheat penalties” because we don’t cheat (at least from what I’ve seen but I may be wrong) and long may that continue.

Good post. These type of players DO know how to play the officials and they are very good at it and as you you say a little bit of contact and over they go.
The game, at times, is turning into netball with no physical contact.
