Nick Ferrari's tasteless comments about footballer's deathNick Ferrari caused anger last night at an event at Boisdale of Canary Wharf with a bad-taste joke about Emiliano Sala, the Cardiff City footballer who died in a plane crash in January. The LBC presenter was interviewing US actor Charlie Sheen for a private event, at which Sheen was presented with a lifetime achievement award from the Irish Post. When asking about Sheen’s two professional nemeses — Donald Trump and TV writer Chuck Lorre — Ferrari presented a hypothetical scenario: “You get a trip back to Ireland, Charlie, and you’re flying over the Atlantic, but sadly the plane has been organised by Cardiff City Football Club and it doesn’t get there and you crash in the Atlantic sea.
“Charlie Sheen, you’re alone in the two-man dinghy. In front of you two people are drowning: Donald Trump and Chuck Lorre. You can only save one: who and why?”
Audience members shouted and booed at Ferrari’s question. Sala had just been bought by Cardiff City and was flying in a private plane when it crashed into the sea off Guernsey on January 21. His death sparked an outpouring of grief across the footballing world. Though some guests at the Boisdale were outraged, the interview moved on and touched on other topics, including Sheen’s sobriety. He gave up drink more than a year ago and told the audience that though he missed “the idea” of it, “there was nothing left for me to discover”. But it was Ferrari’s Cardiff question that stuck in the minds of some audience members. Confronted by guests after the show, a contrite Ferrari was overheard apologising for any offence caused.
It’s been a busy week for Sheen — on Tuesday he hosted a Q&A at Annabel’s, at which he was asked by a guest for advice on hiring a nanny. His response: “Make sure she is 10 times less hot than your wife.”
