Danny Gabbidon's best Cardiff City XI of the century

Wednesday 10th April 2019

Two promotions to the Premier League, an FA Cup final and a League Cup final.

It's fair to say Cardiff City have had their fair share of success since the turn of the millennium.

But who are the best players to have featured for the Bluebirds in that time?

We asked former Cardiff and Wales centre-back Danny Gabbidon, who joined the Bluebirds in 2000, to pick his best Cardiff XI since that year. Here's what he went with...

Goalkeeper: DAVID MARSHALL

I didn't play with him too much but I'm sure the fans will agree with this one.

Cardiff have had some great goalkeepers like Neil Alexander but Marshall was fantastic between the sticks.

I managed him briefly as caretaker boss and he's done so much for the history of the club.

Right-back: KEVIN MCNAUGHTON

Again, another one after I left but I know how big he was with the fans.

A fantastic player and servant. He was crucial in getting them to the Premier League the first time around. Still in the hearts of fans which is a good barometer of how much you mean to a club.

You always knew what you would get with him. The fans still welcome him back and, in turn, he loves them as well.

Centre-backs: DANNY GABBIDON and SCOTT YOUNG

I'll have to pick myself!

When I came to Cardiff, I was 21 and learning my way in the game.

It was an important time in my career. I learned a lot, I grew a lot.

Some of my best football was while I was at Cardiff.

As for my centre-back partner, that's hard. I'll go for Scott Young, a player that came through the ranks at Cardiff.

He was a home-grown talent and was a mainstay in a real period of transition for the club.

An important figure in the team, he offered consistency in the shirt.

I always enjoyed playing alongside him - plus he'd be straight on the phone to me if I didn't pick him!

Left-back: ANDY LEGG

I'll go with Leggy — he could play a number of positions so I have to get him the team somewhere.

To play for the enemy as he did would have put him on the back-foot with the fans from the off, so it's testament to him that he proved himself to them at the club.

His long throw was something else, as was his consistency.

Right-midfield: JUNIOR HOILETT

I'd put him in for the single fact that his goals got Cardiff in the Premier League last season.

He was Cardiff's best player in the Championship last year and his goals were vital.

He's really rejuvenated his career at Cardiff after a lean spell at QPR and he'll be remembered for a while to come.

Central midfield: PETER WHITTINGHAM and GRAHAM KAVANAGH

Whittingham was a fans' favourite for sure. He had a wand of a left foot and could put the ball anywhere he wanted — plus he could score goals.

He was another one who clearly enjoyed his time here. He probably could have left but he was comfortable here.

Cardiff got the best out of him and he'll go down as one of the best in Cardiff's history.

I played under so many captains in my career but Kavanagh was one of the best.

He looked after the other players and was the complete midfielder.

Tackling, passing, shooting — he could do everything. There was a lot of pressure on him after arriving from Stoke for big money but he was fantasic.

Left-midfield: JOE LEDLEY

He's a good friend so I'd be in trouble if I didn't pick him.

He made his debut for the club really young and from his first training session, it was obvious he was special.

We didn't have to wait a couple of seasons to see how good he was and it's no surprise he's had the career he's had.

He was fantastic in a City shirt, helped Cardiff get to an FA Cup final and was fairly underrated — he could do everything.

Strikers: ROB EARNSHAW and JAY BOTHROYD

Earnie was a phenomenal goalscorer. The amount of goals he could score — he had every finish in the locker.

I'd be standing there at the back in amazement watching him tuck them away.

He scored some really important goals and made it look so easy. One of the best strikers to play for the Bluebirds.

I'd partner him with Jay Bothroyd. He was another striker who scored so many goals.

He even got an England call-up one season after netting so many times for Cardiff.

That's some achievement considering Cardiff were in the Championship at the time.

As part of Coca-Cola and the Premier League’s Where Everyone Plays campaign, Coca-Cola are bringing fans closer to the action with the Trophy Tour. What does Danny Gabidon think of #WhereEveryonePlays?

"It's a fantastic campaign," said Gabbidon. "They've been involved in the game a long time, from the elite level down to grassroots.

"It's about bringing the Premier League closer to the fans.

"Wherever you are, whoever you are, it's an opportunity to get closer to the action.

"It's an important thing to give something back to the fans."

I liked Scott Young but you cant put him before Morrison, Bamba, Manga, Hudson, Roger Johnson, Loovens, James Collins etc even if he is Gabiddons mate.

Should be the current starting XI. Apart from Whittingham and Bothroyd, I don't see any of his choices making it into our current squad when they were at their prime with us.

Koumas has to be in that team!

Easy enough to pick a favourite 11 but its hard to pick a best 11 as players played at different levels in different teams.

Like is Ricky Sciemca better than Gunner probably not but did I prefer him? yes thought he was outstanding for us alongside McPhail

Agree with his choices or not, it’s all a nonsense really.
He’s picked himself
A player because he’s the fans favourite and a player because he’s his friend ffs :laughing6:
Scott Young?!

What!!!!
No Mark Hudson? Hasselbaink? Chopra? Bellamy? Ramsey? Roger Johnson? Tom Heaton? Kenny Miller? Ross McCormack?

I would switch Bothroyd for Chopra, I think Chops is a better player back in the day.

:laughing6:

Did you ever watch Kav play?
He was with us for four or five years and was a great player and a brilliant captain. In fact, one of the best we’ve had in my opinion.
I can’t see how you could compare Arter (who I like) especially as he and Camarasa have only been with us a bloody tomato picking season!
