Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder says he won’t try to change Gary Madine’s approach, as he prepares to welcome the striker back into his squad for tomorrow night’s Championship clash with Birmingham City.
The on-loan strike from Cardiff has missed the last three matches for the Blades, after being sent off for a reckless challenge on Ezri Konsa in the win over Brentford last month.
The Blades have won two and lost one of their three matches without the striker, who is expected to return to the squad for the game at St Andrew’s.
However, Wilder has insisted that he will not change the 28-year-old’s approach following the red card.
“We’ve missed him. It was a bit reckless from Gaz from my point of view; a lot of people thought it was a yellow at the time and I think it was bordering on a yellow and a red,” said Wilder, as quoted by the Sheffield Star.
“Gaz isn’t a serial offender in terms of getting booked or sent off,” added the Blades boss.
“It’s a committed game, a contact game, and he’s mistimed a tackle. John Fleck mistimed one last year, Chris Basham mistimes them all over the place which is why he gets booked so often.
“All my players compete and I’m never going to take that out of them. The decision went against us with Gaz but I’m not going to change our approach and I wouldn’t expect Gary to change his approach.”
Madine has made ten appearances for the Blades since joining on loan from Cardiff City in January, scoring two goals in the 4-0 win over Reading in February.
Sheffield United moved back into the automatic promotion places at the weekend with a 1-0 win at Preston North End, with rivals Leeds United losing 1-0 at Birmingham.
The Blades are currently second in the Championship table, one point ahead of Leeds and seven behind leaders Norwich City in the race for automatic promotion.
Leeds will go second tonight with a win at Preston, but whatever the result at Deepdale, United will have a chance to return to the top two against Birmingham at St Andrew’s tomorrow.
The Verdict
Wilder is right. It is a committed, competitive game and sometimes players do mistime challenges.
The Championship is a fiercely competitive league and there is no need for him to change his players’ approach after one sending off.
Madine has been a good player for the Blades since his loan move to Bramall Lane and it will be a big boost for Wilder to have him back for the final six matches.
