Bryn Bach Primary School pupil Joel O'Leary helps Cardiff City U9s to international glory

A NINE-YEAR-OLD Bryn Bach Primary pupil helped his side create history as Cardiff City U9s became the first British side to win the Baltic Football Academy Cup in their age group.

Joel O’Leary travelled with his teammates to the capital Vilnius for the International youth football tournament, competing against teams from across Europe.

Cardiff City U9s were unbeaten and won the tournament for their age group, scoring 41 goals in total and conceding only five.

The result meant that Cardiff City U9s not only brought the trophy home but created history as the first British team to win, surpassing Liverpool U9s, who reached the semi-finals in 2017.

Centre back Joel has been playing football for about four or five years and wants to be a footballer when he is older.

He scored three of his team’s 41 goals and was really proud of himself and happy at winning the tournament.

Proud dad Dean O’Leary, who travelled with the team, was delighted and had praise for his son’s school.

He said: “Bryn Bach Primary have been great by letting him go and have Wednesdays off school to train.”
