Cardiff City ready to call truce with Nantes over £15m Emiliano Sala feud
By Ben Rumsby and Harry Harris

Updated:

FIFA has permitted the club a 10-day extension, with the deadline falling on Saturday, April 13, so effectively the new deadline would be two days later on Monday, April 15.

Cardiff have been granted an extension to the deadline to respond to FIFA over Nantes' complaint regarding the Premier League club's refusal to pay Emiliano Sala's transfer fee.

Nantes FC say they will now only deal directly with Fifa.

Cardiff City have asked Nantes for a meeting to try to resolve their feud over the tragic transfer of Emiliano Sala, the Daily Telegraph can reveal, Nantes now say they will deal directly with Fifa.

The Premier League club have also been given more time to respond to a complaint by the French side over their refusal to pay Sala’s £15 million fee after informing Fifa of their intentions.

A truce between the two clubs would end the threat of football’s world governing body ruling against one of them in their row over who owned Sala when he was killed in a plane crash more than two months ago.

Lawyers for Cardiff were on Tuesday night awaiting a response from their Nantes counterparts to a written request for a meeting, which the Telegraph has been told was sent last week.

The Welsh club had been given until Wednesday to explain their withholding of the first instalment of Sala’s transfer fee but have been granted an extension until April 15.

Fifa’s president, Gianni Infantino, made it clear more than a month ago that the governing body would prefer Cardiff and Nantes to resolve the dispute among themselves.

Cardiff said in a statement: “Cardiff City has requested and been granted an extension to the deadline to respond to Fifa on this matter.

“Cardiff City recently wrote to FC Nantes proposing a meeting to discuss issues surrounding the Emiliano Sala tragedy and planned transfer, in line with Fifa’s request for our two clubs to come to a resolution directly. To date, Cardiff City has not received a response from FC Nantes.”

Were Nantes to snub a meeting, Cardiff will – as previously revealed by the Telegraph – tell Fifa the deal they struck to buy Sala became “null and void” after he died.

Their response to the governing body will include the refusal of the Premier League to allow the striker to play in the competition over what was a front-loaded signing-on fee that was non-compliant with its rules.

Cardiff also plan to argue that a clause in the transfer agreement with Nantes – one they say the French club had even proposed – was not fulfilled.

And they could yet launch a vicarious negligence claim against the French club over the death of Sala, something they were exploring even before it emerged on Saturday that the pilot of the plane carrying him had been colour blind and not qualified to fly at night.

Nantes said last month they planned to dispute Cardiff’s case with Fifa.

New twist in Cardiff City Emiliano Sala dispute as Bluebirds request meeting with Nantes and Fifa extend deadline

Cardiff City have requested a truce with Nantes as the Emiliano Sala transfer fee dispute wrangles on.

Cardiff had been due to present their case to FIFA by the end of play today (Wednesday) after the French club took the issue to the world governing body, but Cardiff have now been granted more time to do so.

FIFA has permitted the club a 10-day extension, with the deadline falling on Saturday, April 13, so effectively the new deadline would be two days later on Monday, April 15.

The wrangle centres around whether Sala was a Cardiff or Nantes player at the time of the plane tragedy on January 21.

The Bluebirds are withholding payment on the £15million transfer fee, while the French club are demanding the money and have asked FIFA to intervene.

Cardiff have now written to the French side requesting a direct meeting over the dispute regarding the fee, but their calls for a truce have so far gone unanswered.

The extension allows Nantes more time to decide whether to respond to the request to open up direct communication, but no response from the French club had been received by the end of play on Tuesday.
