Chris Sutton says Cardiff City "got what they deserved" following their heartbreaking 2-1 defeat to Chelsea on Sunday.

Cardiff lost to Chelsea in frustrating - and controversial - circumstances to leave their Premier League future hanging in the balance.

Late goals from Cesar Azpilicueta and Ruben Loftus-Cheek gave Chelsea all three points in South Wales, leaving Neil Warnock absolutely furious with the officials.

Sutton had predicted, even before a ball was kicked this season, that Cardiff would be relegated, suggesting they could finish the campaign with a record low points total.

And on BBC 606 on Sunday evening, Sutton stuck the knife in further - but he was also put in his place by Robbie Savage.

This is what Sutton said over the controversial Chelsea goals.


Sutton: "Well, he (the linesman) obviously didn't notice (Azpilicueta offside) because he would have flagged.

"It was a horrible decision and I can understand Neil Warnock's frustration to an extent. But Cardiff are in the bottom three because frankly they haven't been good enough this season.

"Loftus-Cheek still went on to score the winner. Cardiff should have seen the game out, got something out of the game, they deserve what they got in the end."

He was then questioned on his controversial opinion by presenter Jonathan Overend.


"No! No! They got a little bit unlucky but what about the first header?" he added.



"The flick, that was poor defending. Loftus-Cheek scores the winner, Cardiff are in the bottom three because they haven't been good enough all season, it's a bit of sour grapes. I've seen Jason Mohammad on social media complaining about the officiating this season, do your job!

"They are still in the bottom three and they are going down! Cardiff are going down, I told you before the start of the season."

Robbie Savage then joins the conversation - and offers a differing view.

He said: "Just a quickie, Jonathan, I listened to Chris there, it's amazing, he didn't even watch the game! He doesn't know what he's talking about! I've got to go, bye!

"He didn't watch the game, so for him to say Cardiff deserved nothing out of the game..."

What a fking prick,,, i hate this guy. Why is he even a pundit i never know he talks utter bollocks all the time and for savage to say he didnt even watch the game is a utter joke,

He replied to a fan saying he's never wrong. To which his co presenter reminded him of his prediction at the start of the season... But that was 'tongue in cheek' apparently. Such an over inflated opinion of himself.

Yesterday he said he could be a premier league official he also said he would've bullied Virgil van Dijk if he had to play against him.

He's a poor man's Robbie Savage and Adrian Durham trying to wind people up but just comes out looking like an arrogant knob.

Hes just playing the game

He is being controversial so he gets more bookings as a pundit. He doesn't believe half of what he says but it gets him recognised and talked about which in turn gets him work and makes him a lot of money for talking bollocks

Best to ignore it

Chris Sutton is a one cap wonder, a second rate footballer and a third rate pundit. Adrian Durham's being doing this for 10 years and will be doing it in 10 years time. Crap journalism giving short time success and career stagnation. He derides Jason Mohammad but I don't see Chris Sutton achieving his sports presentation levels. When it comes to sports presentation he's not fit to lace his boots.

In 20 years time he'll be booking into hotels using a false name, never sleeping quite as easy at night and always one eye looking over his shoulder. Is it worth it ?

He is an absolute joke. The listeners know it & his colleagues know it. I cringe whenever he's on air.

Don't give him the attention, that's why he says it. It works.

He's not wrong, at 1_1 we should of seen the game out, but just collapsed. Also we're not in the bottom three because of the Chelsea game, we're there because we've neen the third worse team in the league.

As a professional 'pundit' / expert - Sutton is being paid to give his professional opinion.

Saying "they got what they deserved" is not exactly a detailed analysis of why we lost the game.

We lost the game because either the officials cheated or they were incompetent. They missed 2 clear penalties, one red card and an off side decision only Stevie Wonder could miss.

Sutton is akin to a six former who after having his first pint - then wants to be the class clown - when all it does is show him up for being a bit of a t1t
