Sadness as Barrie Hole, a former Cardiff City, Swansea City and Wales international midfielder, dies

He played for his country 30 times in the sixties

Barrie Hole, a former Wales, Swansea and Cardiff City player, has died aged 76.

Swansea-born Barrie hailed from a footballing family - his father had been a professional player for Swansea Town before World War II and his brothers Colin and Alan also played for their hometown club.

But it was to Cardiff City that Barrie's early allegiances lay: he made his league debut for the Bluebirds as a 17-year-old during a season when Cardiff gained promotion to the first division.

He was also a Welsh Cup winner with Cardiff City on two occasions - in 1964 and 1965 - a club where he made 211 appearances and scored 16 goals.

It was while playing for Cardiff that he gained his first of 30 Welsh caps, before being signed up by Blackburn Rovers in 1966 for the dizzy sum, then, of £40,000.

He also had a stint at Aston Villa in the late sixties, before returning to his home town in 1970.

He joined Swansea for £20,000, playing for the club for a couple of years before retiring in 1972.

But it was for his contribution to the Wales team of the sixties and early seventies that he might be remembered most. He made his debut against Northern Ireland in 1963, with his final appearance coming in a 1971 match with Romania.

His family went on to run a newsagents in the city.

Tributes have started to come in for the former international player.

Cardiff City tweeted: "We're saddened... to learn of the passing of former Bluebird Barrie Hole.

"Part of our 1959/60 promotion squad, Barrie made over 200 appearances for City between 1959-60.

"We offer our sincere condolences to Barrie's family."

The Football Association of Wales said it was "sad to learn of the passing of Barrie Hole."

It continued: "The thoughts of everyone connected to the Football Association of Wales are with Barrie Hole's family and friends at this sad time."
