The Real Madrid board of directors, which met today, Monday 11 March 2019, has decided to terminate Santiago Solari's contract as first-team coach, whilst Real Madrid have offered him the opportunity to remain at the club.

Real Madrid wish to thank Solari for his work, commitment and the loyalty that he has always displayed towards this club, which is his home.

The board of directors also agreed on the appointment of Zinedine Zidane as head coach of Real Madrid with immediate effect for the remainder of the season and the next three campaigns, until 30 June 2022.

The Real Madrid president will address the media alongside Zinedine Zidane at 8pm (CET) tonight in the Santiago Bernabéu media room.

UPDATED

Zinedine Zidane is set to return as Real Madrid manager just 10 months after leaving the Spanish giants, according to European football expert Guillem Balague.

The Frenchman will replace Santiago Solari, who was in charge for less than five months.

Former Real midfielder Zidane, 46, left in May after leading the club to a third straight Champions League trophy.

Real are currently third in La Liga, 12 points behind leaders Barcelona.

Solari is set to be sacked after a 4-1 win over Real Valladolid on Sunday - which followed a shock Champions League exit to Ajax.

That 4-1 home defeat and 5-3 aggregate loss to the Dutch side was the final straw for Real president Florentino Perez.

The defeat by Ajax followed two consecutive defeats by Barcelona in El Clasico - a 1-0 loss in La Liga and a 3-0 thrashing in the Copa del Rey.

Zidane stepped down following the Champions League final victory over Liverpool, and Julen Lopetegui was hired as his successor just before the World Cup where he had been due to lead Spain, who promptly sacked him.

Four and a half months later it was Real's turn to fire him.

Reserve-team boss Solari came in as caretaker before being given a contract to 2021 on 13 November.

Player Power...again! ;) :(

Can see the value in Zidane going back but El Presidente wanted Mourinho

Surely not the news Gareth Bale wanted to hear right now...? :(

Certainly bad news for Bale. Can certainly see him leaving there in the summer now.

Perez has wanted rid of Sergio Ramos for years now. He knows he’s the man with the real power at that club. His voice is always heard by the players above the manager’s and the president’s.

Until he finally leaves, the manager will never be the boss there. Zidane might do well but after a while Ramos will decide he’s had enough of him, and that will be that.
