Inside the crisis meeting Neil Warnock held with Cardiff City players to rectify 'sloppy' form

Friday 1st March 2019

Neil Warnock held a special meeting with his Cardiff City players after their defeats to Watford and Everton, asking them to "look at themselves" following two poor performances.

The players also held their own private talks, with Warnock admitting Cardiff have been sloppy since back-to-back victories against Bournemouth and Southampton had lifted them out of the relegation zone.

Cardiff are now 18th, two points behind Saints with an inferior goal difference, with 10 games remaining.

Warnock - who after the 3-0 reverse to Everton demanded players fight "in the trenches" with him - revealed the details of the meeting.

"I had a chat with them all yesterday (Thursday) and put my point of view forward about the remainder of the season," he said.

"And after that meeting I think they stayed in and had a meeting of their own

"I was quite pleased about that, they talked about certain things - no doubt that I commented on.

"They’re a good group of lads, you can't fault the effort ever and they just know they’ve been sloppy.

"It’s a matter of everybody trying to rectify that and give a good account of ourselves.

"We'll have a great following (at Wolves), it's always a great atmosphere down there and I think we've got to give it our best go now."

Warnock had mentioned "one or two" players who had left him down against Everton in midweek.

And he was keen for players to blame themselves rather than others for the damaging slump in form which could prove pivotal to the Bluebirds' hopes of avoiding relegation.

"With players at any level, if you do make mistakes you don’t tend to look in the mirror, you tend to look around," he added.

"I was a winger and I used to blame the ball or the forward or the crowd or something. You don't tend to look in the mirror.

"All I’ve said to them is ‘have a look at your own performance and do you think you've done as well as you could do in the last couple of games?'

"There’s a few lads who know they’ve underperformed, underachieved and they’ll be desperate to put it right, I think, because I know what they're like.

"I haven’t got many lads who don’t want to be in the trenches with me.

"I’ve got a couple of lads who don’t have enough belief in themselves. That can come back in the space of half an hour. They’ve got to realise they can play an important part and get their confidence back."

Warnock admitted the Emiliano Sala tragedy and subsequent transfer dispute has left him and the club emotionally drained, with Cardiff fighting on all fronts at the moment.

He added: "I think at times like this you realise about your family. Your family is more important than football. And then I think you just have to be focused on what it is and its not easy to be focused when there is so much going off.

"But at the end of the day these tragic things happen and you just have to get on with it. I think the club has been fantastic, the supporters have never wavered and we have to concentrate on that."

Cardiff head to Wolves on Saturday looking to bounce back against a team they beat 2-1 in the Welsh capital earlier in the campaign.

The Bluebirds should have Spanish midfielder Victor Camarasa back in contention, plus Oumar Niasse who was ineligible for the game against parent club Everton.

On Camarasa , Warnock said: "I have been informed by our medical people that his medical people have said he is ready and they have agreed he is ready so I would imagine he will be in the squad.

"His mental state - there is nothing wrong with that part of him.

"He was disappointed he could not play, himself personally in the last few games. He is a lovely lad and you will not get anything less than 100 per cent. He has so much ability.

"And we do miss him. Especially at this level, you need these kind of players in your team. We have missed him.

"Hopefully he will be able to contribute in the last 10 games because he is a game-changer."

Neil don't play Manga at fullback. Morriston has to be dropped. Murphy can stay at home.

They can have as many meetings as they want, but the simple facts are there is no quality in the squad, the players have done well just to be in this position, but I think we are going down,it’s not just the last few games,it’s been many games this year where we ve never been in the game, against the top sides we are normally a goal down inside the first five minutes, and it’s just a question of how many more will we concede, and if any players do actually read this board and are reading this, please prove me wrong

What a load of bollocks you speak. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a positive post from you. Why don’t you go and support one of the top six and f**k off we don’t need your kind of ‘support ‘. People talk about plastics, you negative bastards are the ones we need to get rid of. Just as things are going wrong that’s all we need is tw**ts like you on the players backs spouting off. Just saying.

what a vile post from the individual one from above.

due to having significantly lower resources than even our relegation rivals, it is no surprise that our squad is man for man worse than them. however, football is not played on paper, and that's explained why being far from the best championship team did not preclude promotion. rivals like southampton, newcastle, and brighton have all spent considerably more than us.

pointing out this fact does not make you any less of a fan.

back to the headline. an informal chat with some players becomes a 'crisis meeting'. the reality is that warnock enjoys total respect from the players, and i wouldn't be surprised if these meetings are fairly regular, and not just called at times of manufactured 'crises'.

We’re more than capable of getting back on track with at least a point tomorrow. Wolves haven’t won in four and their europa league push has faded. Hopefully Vic & Arter are back together to make the difference .
