Brendan Rodgers has been appointed Leicester City's new manager after leaving his job at Celtic.

The Northern Irishman has signed a contract until June 2022 and succeeds Claude Puel, who was sacked on Sunday after 16 months in charge.

It marks a Premier League return for Rodgers, who previously managed Liverpool and Swansea City.

"I'll give my life to make the supporters proud of their club." Rodgers said.

"Together, we'll be stronger and I'm looking forward to working with the players, staff and supporters to make the right steps forward."

While at Liverpool, Rodgers almost won the Premier League title in 2013-14 before he was sacked in October 2015.

He then took over at Celtic in May 2016 and won all seven domestic trophies available, most recently leading them to the Scottish League Cup in December.

Talking with Leicester about the vacant manager role.

Celtic fans up in arms saying its a step down, no trophies to be won etc

Surely a move to a Prem Club is a step up from SPL, trophies or not?

From the BBC...

Brendan Rodgers: Celtic boss set to join Leicester after permission for talks

Brendan Rodgers is expected to become Leicester City's manager after Celtic gave him permission to speak to the Premier League club.

The Foxes are keen to install a successor to the sacked Claude Puel as soon as possible.

First-team coach John Kennedy is set to take charge of Celtic for Wednesday's Scottish Premiership trip to Hearts.

"Brendan has indicated that this is an opportunity he wishes to investigate further," Celtic said in a statement.

Former Liverpool boss Rodgers cut short a BBC interview when asked about the Leicester vacancy after the champions' win over Motherwell on Sunday.

They are eight points clear of nearest rivals Rangers in the league as they chase an eighth successive title.

Rodgers has won two Scottish Premierships, three Scottish League Cups and two Scottish Cups since arriving at Parkhead in the summer of 2016.

They reached the group stages of the Champions League in his first two seasons, but were knocked out in the third qualifying round by AEK Athens this term amid unrest between Rodgers and the Celtic board over a failure to strengthen the squad last summer.

Last week, they bowed out of the Europa League at the last-32 stage for the second successive season, losing to Valencia.

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard played under Rodgers at Liverpool, where he narrowly failed to guide them to the Premier League title in 2014 before his departure in October 2015.

Gerrard, speaking on Tuesday, said: "Brendan has done ever so well at Celtic over the last few years. It is no surprise other clubs watch him and want to acquire his services.

"I have worked with Brendan, he is a very good coach. I am not surprised at the timing. From our point of view, we will keep an eye on it and see how it pans out. My focus is on Rangers."

Puel was dismissed after 16 months in charge following Saturday's 4-1 defeat by Crystal Palace.

The 57-year-old Frenchman left the club 12th in the Premier League having lost five of their past six league games.

First-team coaches Mike Stowell and Adam Sadler were put in temporary charge. Leicester play Brighton at home in the Premier League on Tuesday (19:45 GMT).

It's the news the Celtic fans had been dreading. Since taking over in 2016 he has delivered everything domestically - the double treble was secured at the end of last season and the club were on the way to making it three in a row.

But there was always a feeling the former Liverpool boss wanted to try his luck once again in English football's top flight. Suggestions he wasn't getting the boardroom backing he was looking for may also have hastened his exit - but it leaves Celtic looking to replace one of their most successful managers.

Rodgers has rebuilt his reputation in Scotland after his ultimate failings at Liverpool and is certainly not short of personality or charisma.

The 46-year-old also plays attractive, attacking football and shares in Puel's penchant for promoting young talent. And after three years and seven trophies - to date - maybe Rodgers will feel that the time is right to leave.

Re: BRENDAN RODGERS CLOSE TO PREMIER LEAGUE RETURN

Step up or step down is a tough but good question :thumbright:

My own thoughts are that it is a bit of both when the Scottish Premier League club are Glasgow Celtic and the Premier League club are Leicester City...

Glasgow Celtic are a 'massive' club in any terms but that is tempered by them currently being the only viable team in Scotland (hopefully Rangers are on their way back) and it's not too hard to win their trophies, whilst progress in European competition remains a tough ask due to the financial restraints that accompany their geographic status

Leicester City are a decent club and only two years ago won the Premier League itself; but does that make them a 'top' club and does it give Brendan Rodgers the opportunity to progress theirs and his own ambitions?

Only time will tell but my own view is that Leicester City have peaked (and what a way to do it) and Brendan Rodgers will not be able to take Leicester City into the Premier League upper levels at which their supporters now seem to believe they belong

I think its a step up and certainly a much bigger challenge. Never liked Brenda though but if its a change in style they want it makes sense to go for someone like him.

Surprised he didn't stay until the end of the season to do the treble treble.

As it happens went to the Celtic game on Sunday so it looks like I saw his last game in charge.

leicester are a well funded, stable club. operating in the middle section of the league is a precarious existence, and can be gone with just one bad season. look at stoke, southampton for evidence.

he will no doubt have a hefty wage rise should the move materialise, which is important to him given the lack of a playing career. they have a very strong spine and with further investment and good management, could move up the table a bit.

you judge celtic by how they do in europe and they haven't done anything. lennon did much better. he bullshits better than anyone in football and look where it's taken him.

I feel like “I’ll give my life..” was a bloody awful choice of words for Brendan to use, and the press team to put out, given what happened at the club only a few months ago.

Gotta say, I thought he’d hold out for a different job for his return to the PL. If he can keep them in the Too 10 moving forward, he’ll probably be able to get a few years out of the job, though. Some snakes in their changing room who need to be moved on though - wouldn’t trust the likes of Vardy and co., were I a new manager going into that club
