Neil Warnock: Some Of Those Goals Were Pathetic

Sky Sport:

Saturday 22nd February 2019

Neil Warnock has branded some of the goals conceded by Cardiff City as “pathetic” following their 5-1 hammering at home to Watford.

But the Bluebirds manager has also challenged his players to recover quickly as they bid to stay in the Premier League.

Warnock says referee Simon Hooper admitted Cardiff should have had a first-half penalty in their heavy defeat on Friday night.

Cardiff remain just a point off the Premier League relegation zone after they were thrashed by a ruthless Watford side at the Cardiff City Stadium, where Gerard Deulofeu scored a hat-trick and Troy Deeney grabbed two.

In the 42nd minute, Josh Murphy was taken down inside the area by Daryl Janmaat when Watford were 1-0 up, and Warnock says referee Hooper owned up to making “a mistake” over the spot-kick incident.

“He said he’s seen it back on video and he’s made a mistake,” Warnock said. “What do you say to that? It doesn’t help me when you get battered five.

“VAR would have solved that in 30 seconds, everybody on the pitch knew it was a penalty.

“Troy (Deeney) said it was a nailed-on penalty, so too (Adrian) Mariappa and all their staff on the touchline. I like Simon as a referee and he’s not done it on purpose, he’s upset himself about the situation.”

Cardiff could finish the weekend in the drop zone if Southampton record at least a point away to Arsenal on Sunday.

Warnock insists his side must show resilience heading into the final months of the season.

He told Sky Sports: “The goals were giveaways and pathetic really. We will keep fighting.

“We are going to have games like these where we play against good teams. They are a good side but it doesn’t half help when you get decisions going for you like that.

“We have to be stronger mentally. We can’t let decisions like that affect our game and collapse like that. We have to grit our teeth and come back with another answer.”

A superb hat-trick from Watford’s Spanish striker Deulofeu and two goals from Troy Deeney gave Watford a thumping victory.

Deulofeu had not scored for eight matches but he scored before the break and then showed class and composure to strike twice inside four minutes on the hour mark.

It was all pathetic last night. Those 2 goals were pathetic, the penalty decision was pathetic and the team selection was the most pathetic things of it all.

Yes we need to bounce back straight away so let's pray we get the right team selection this time.

We basically need a complete new defence when the time comes. Sadly the only one we can afford is Sol Bamba because of the match winning stuff he does as well.
Having said this, we have to do the best that we can with what we've got at the moment. I think we'll survive the season but the biggest lesson from it is that we need a much more competent defensive set up in this league .
Considering the way we've consistently leaked often silly goals we've done well to be where we are, and without those constant mistakes leading to goals we'd probably be mid table .

It's a hard thing to say but some of our favourite defensive players aren't up to this standard, so that will have to be addressed

Bamba has a mistake in him too. I just thought last night going from 2 in the middle to 3 they got a bit lost and in each others way. 2 of Bamba, Morrison and Manga are decent CBs at this level, certainly as good as the partnerships of the teams around us.

the defence was plenty good enough in the championship, but this is the premier league. players are more clinical, quicker, and you don't get away with mistakes.

morrison is probably the best defender, but he hasn't stepped up as much as bamba this season. bamba is not a solid defender, and always has a mistake in him, as does manga.

if we weren't operating under such a strict budget, i'm sure we would have signed an established centre back to raise standards. it was beyond belief that we didn't sign a decent right back.

if we stay up next season, we need to add a quality CB, and right back.

We played better with peltier in the back 3 rather than Morrison. Morrison is solid enough but he is shown up for pace a lot .pelts bamba and manga were doing well and we looked solid. I think it was the wrong decision to rush Morrison back after a lay off with surgery and a side that was showing signs of geling at the back

Caught in the middle of defence like before Christmas

Morrison needs to do the right thing and sit out.

Manga struggles on the right.

Pelts isn't an amazing RB but he does the job better then manga.

Manga is a better cb then Morrison

Bamba is a better captain then Morrison and overall a the better cb.

10 years ago Warnock wouldn't think twice about the sacrifice of a captain not getting the job done.

But it's sacrificing morale of players that have played well.the last few weeks not even having a look In

Sure, that was what I was saying, but maybe I was unclear in fairness. I meant that we can afford the mistakes he sometimes makes because his match winning exploits at both ends of the field outweigh them. He can certainly make a few major cock ups though I know .

For me and 29000 Cardiff fans the most pathetic thing was Warnock's team selection, you don't change a winning team.

I don't rate Murphy at all I think he's a young Noone ... in fact I think noone was a better allrounder.

Murphy got a bit more pace but his ball skills and attention to assist lacks massive. I can't remember him having a pot chance from out side the area. Loses the ball 9/10 times on the corner of the box.

He was well out of his depth last night, looked lost, on his heels, unlucky not to have the penalty mind but one of many weak links last night

Majority of defenders are reading him from his first touch and closing him down very quickly... Maybe no confidence with trying somthing different :thumbright: or maybe reached his limit. Hope he proves me wrong and gets an assist at least this season. Kadeem Harris was the better in eyes more quality going forward. Not sure how good Reid could be out on the wing as he hasn't really played it
