Emiliano Sala family to finally get answers as plane crash investigators reveal exactly when they'll announce findings

Emiliano Sala and pilot Dave Ibbotson are missing

Friday 22nd February 2019

Investigators looking into the plane crash that killed Emiliano Sala will release their initial findings next week.

Sala died from head and trunk injuries after the Piper PA-46 Malibu he and pilot David Ibbotson were flying in crashed last month. The wreckage of the aircraft was found almost a fortnight later, while Mr Ibbotson remains unaccounted for.

After Sala's family held the striker's funeral in his hometown in Argentina last weekend, they finally look to get some answers about the tragedy.

The interim report from the UK Air Accident Investigation Branch is due to be released at 2pm on Monday afternoon. It had been hoped to be released this week, within a month of the accident.

The report is expected to largely focus on the factual findings of the investigation team, who spent almost four days at the site of the plane wreckage after it was located. Such reports are commissioned so quickly in cases where there could be an urgent public safety aspect or if there as a significant public and media interest.

We've taken a look at the evidence which will be considered and what we know so far here .

The AAIB's remit is to "undertake safety investigations to establish the cause of accidents". They do not apportion blame or liability.

The plane initially vanished from radar after making a request to descend on January 21 near the Channel Islands, while making its way from Nantes to Cardiff.
