Family members including Sala’s sister Romina and aunt Mirta Taffarel were both seen opening weeping whilst arriving and leaving the vigil.

Emiliano Sala's body is to be cremated after the funeral in his hometown in Argentina

Emiliano Sala's body will be cremated after well-wishers in the Argentinian town where he grew up say their final farewells on Saturday, officials have confirmed.

Thousands of people are expected to pay their last respects to the new Cardiff City signing at a wake in the sports hall of his boyhood football club San Martin in the small town of Progreso.

His body - repatriated on Friday on a British Airways flight - was due to be driven to the town early on Saturday morning from its overnight resting place at a funeral home in the provincial capital Santa Fe.

Progeso mayor Julio Muller confirmed overnight Sala's body would return to the city of Santa Fe an hour's drive south after the eight-and-a-half-long wake finishes so it can be cremated.

Mr Muller, referring to the tragic footballer by the shortened name his family and friends call him, said: 'If all goes to plan, people will be able to pay their last respects to Emi today from 7am local time to about 3.30pm.

'At 2pm there will be a religious ceremony in the same sports hall where the wake is taking place.

'At 3.30 the family took the decision to cremate Emi's body so it will be returning to the crematorium in the city of Santa Fe.'

The final resting place of the 28-year-old's ashes was not made clear, with some local speculation they would be buried in Progreso but no official information to support the claims.

Most of the town's 3,500 inhabitants are expected to say their final farewells to Progreso's international ambassador, whose life was cut short days after he signed for Cardiff City from Nantes when the single-engine Piper Plane taking him to the Welsh capital crashed into the sea near Guernsey.

Emiliano Sala's wake details confirmed

Julio Muller, mayor of the town of Progreso in the Argentinian province of Santa Fe - where Sala grew up - confirmed his remains would be flown to Ezeiza International Airport in Buenos Aires, arriving this Friday morning.

The former Nantes player’s body will then be taken to the provincial capital by road on a six-hour journey, reaching Progreso - where his family live - on Friday night.

A wake will then be held on Saturday at the gym of his boyhood club, the San Martin Club gym.

Referring to the footballer by his shortened name Emi, he said: “Emi’s remains will reach Progreso, 300 miles north of Buenos Aires, late on Friday. The wake will be organised in the gym at San Martin FC.”

Emiliano Sala's body returns to Argentina

CNN

Friday 15th February 2019

(CNN)Emiliano Sala's body has been returned to Argentina Friday ahead of the football player's funeral at the weekend.

The 28-year-old died after his plane crashed over the English Channel last month, as he made his way to new club Cardiff.
The Argentine striker had joined the Welsh side for a reported £15 million ($19.3 million) from French side Nantes and was heading to Wales after saying farewell to his former teammates.

His body was flown into Ezeiza International Airport, Buenos Aires, Friday before being taken to his hometown of Progreso, where a vigil is to be held in the gymnasium near to the striker's youth-club headquarters.

Emiliano Sala died after his plane crashed over the English Channel.

A vigil for Sala will be held near his former youth club's headquarters.

Sala began his football career at San Martin de Progreso before leaving to forge a professional career at 15.

The club posted a message on social media, writing: "We are waiting for you ... like the first day you left but this time to stay with us forever. You went and you are an example for everyone. Eternally in our hearts."

The Argentine's family members have already arrived ahead of the ceremony -- with the club asking the public and press for the "greatest respect".

Cardiff manager Neil Warnock and chief executive Ken Choo also will reportedly attend Sala's funeral on Saturday, while Nantes defender Nicolas Pallois and the Ligue 1 club's general secretary Loic Morin will represent the French team.

Sala's body was recovered from wreckage of the plane last week, after a private search for the missing soccer star and the plane's pilot David Ibbotson was commissioned by his family -- financed by a crowdfunding campaign.

His family thanked the public after authorities identified the striker's body.

"We would like to thank you for all your signs of affection and support in what is the most painful time of our lives," read a family statement.

"We ask you to respect our grief in these difficult times, and to keep Emi in your prayers and thoughts."

Sala and the 59-year-old Ibbotson were flying in the single-turbine aircraft from Nantes, northern France, to the Welsh capital of Cardiff, when it disappeared from radar near the Channel Islands on January 21.

Pilot Ibbotson is presumed dead, though his body has not yet been recovered.

Sala's body was recovered following a privately-funded search.

The body of 59-year-old David Ibbotson, who was piloting the light aircraft that disappeared on January 21, has yet to be found and his family are insisting the search must go on.

Cardiff City manager Neil Warnock and chief executive Ken Choo are among those who have flown to Argentina to pay their last respects to Sala. Nantes defender Nicolas Pallois and general secretary Loic Morin have also made the journey.

San Martin de Progeso, where Sala played football until he was 15, posted a tribute on Facebook, saying: 'We are waiting for you…like the first day you left but this time to stay with us forever.'

His sister Romina, who travelled to Europe along with mum Mercedes after her brother's plane vanished, said in an emotional social media message posted alongside a video collage featuring Sala on and off the pitch as a boy and a man: 'Tell me this is a nightmare. Emi please return brother. Please. I love you so much.'

Berenice Schkair, one of two women the footballer has been romantically linked to, remembered him on Valentines Day with a photo of him on a running machine in an Argentinian football top and a message alongside a heart which said: 'Thinking of you always.'

Lots of people are arriving to pay their respects.

“People will be able to pass by the coffin, leave a letter, a drawing or flowers,” said Daniel Ribero, president of Sala’s boyhood club San Martin de Progreso.

“He represented a lot for us. We’re a small village and Emi was a celebrity, the only player to turn professional.”

Just watched the news with Neil being interviewed along with others at the funeral, not embarrassed to say tears were flowing down my face, i cant get the look on Emiliano's face when he walked out to the pitch out of my mind, he looked so excited and pleased to be here, so so tragic. Very pleased and proud that the club attended his funeral, couldn't have been easy but they showed his family and friends that he would have loved being at Cardiff with the camaraderie that exists between the players, board and supporters, sometimes life is just so bloody cruel.
