LET'S RETIRE THE NUMBER 27 SHIRT

Fri Feb 08, 2019 2:55 pm

I know it's already been mentioned but I think retiring the number 27 shirt is a great idea. Not only was it going to be Salas number (2+7=9) but also a great way to honour the memory of the 1927 FA cup winning team.
Take a look at that team, you have Hughie Ferguson the scorer who commitment suicide just 3 years later aged 30. Our record goalscorer Len Davies who died of pneumonia aged 45 but the team also featured world war one hero Fred kennor and Ernie Curtis who was a Japanese prisoner of war in 1941. Then there's Billy Hardy who played more games for Cardiff than any other player (including Phil Dwyer).
Even behind the scenes our club creater Bartley Wilson was at the club at the time.
For me to retire the 27 shirt for Sala and the 1927 team is a no brainer and a nice touch.

I can see the logic in that if it were for all the above reasons, particularly all those who died far too young. Would'nt understand it myself if it was for just one person who never wore our shirt, and who probably spent no more than a few hours in his 28 years of life in the city of Cardiff. If we were to honour everyone who has died whether it be in tragic circumstances, or of natural causes, we would run out of ideas of how best to honour them. Some sort of gesture remembering a group of people including Emilio seems to be a good idea to me. We have to remember we have many hardcore fans and past players who have served us well and who are no longer with us.

Was he going to have the number 27 ? as it was never announced

Baring in mind he could well have had the number 9 ,being the biggest signing im sure he would've and danny ward may not have been added to the premier league squad as soon as he did.

The other thing is if we knew what number, maybe fans who want his name/number on a shirt could then do so even the club could do some t-shirts with his name/number on .

Lots of good points there. But then again, its not like anyone is going to run down the dressing room asking for number twenty-seven.. I think it would be a good respectful way to honor the lad. Especially under the circumstances and arrangements that have been made.

He never wore it. It's a no from me

As sad as the situation is I don't think we should retire the number because he never wore it.

It's a nicely thought out idea in all fairness to the OP but it's a no from me.

All that needed to be done has been done imo and it's time to draw a line under it now and let the families grieve in peace.

Not for me. Plenty of other ways :bluebird:

It's certainly mark of respect and has been done by other clubs but retiring shirt numbers is not for me for practical reasons, e.g. even in these days of squad numbers, the No.9 shirt is still synonymous with centre forwards the world over and one to be revered

I think FC Nantes might one day regret their decision to 'retire' the No.9

From a Cardiff perspective the No.27 shirt was not technically Emiliano Sala's and (somewhat ironically) has other connections with Cardiff city FC as a club, so should stay

For me, I'm sure there are other lasting ways to remember Emiliano Sala (and anyone else who has ben lost during their prime at a club) and I'm sure one or more will be found at the CCS :thumbright:

No let's not.
As sad as these events have been, we don't have to do that. He never wore it.
We can be respectful in many other ways, as the club has already done to be fair.

But Sven one of the very photo's we see of him is actually with the number 27. A symbolic retirement wouldn't hurt. :bluebird:

If he'd played for us then retire the shirt number he was allocated. Retiring the 27 shirt is a no from me.
A simple plaque, maybe attached to the plinth of the Keenor statue may be enough.

Surely a memorial stone or plaque where the flowers and tributes were laid would be a better more permanent solution rather than retiring a number.

It’s tragic, it’s been widely felt but we are still in the position whereby the player did not get chance to train with us or play for us.

Lads, so many suggestions have been made. Some more appropriate than others....

Name the stadium after him,
Name a stand after him,
Something in the memorial garden,
Use his words above the tunnel,
Use his words as our club mantra,
Retire the number 27,
A statue,
An annual friendly,
etc, etc........

We need to choose ONE, do it our way, and do it properly. My personal preference would be to use his words in some way.

Jules, I accept that (the image) but he never actually played for us and whilst I'm not disagreeing with the sentiment (or the outpouring of sympathy) I just don't see the practicalities of 'retiring' a football shirt number

A strange analogy I know; but what if the Munich disaster (Man Utd) had happened today? :?

Sadly, tragedies occur and life has to move on (as Manchester United did under Sir Matt Busby back in the 1950's and another form of permanent remembrance should be found

the Manchester United point is a good one, similarly the even worse disaster with Torino a decade earlier.

Not for me, Nantes have made a real gesture retiring his number. Ours would be a token gesture of a number he would have only had for a few months no doubt.

Just Keep his name in the squad in the matchady programme the way Arsenal did

Words above the tunnel for me.

The kind of permanent tribute I would like to see (from the football world) is something like 'the Sala law' where the powers and earnings of agents are restricted.

We could have "together we will make it"

Definitely agree with a type of sala law clear guidelines and rules are needed with firm punishments

No. He never wore that number for us so it’s a no from me.

It would also be a no from me, i'm not a fan or retiring shirts in sport and i don't think any sportsman would want his number retired either, other people owned the number before them too.
