Two strikers Cardiff City tried to sign on deadline day after Emiliano Sala tragedy — reports

Reports have suggested Cardiff City made transfer bids for two familiar names

Monday 4th February 2019

Cardiff City tried to sign Russian World Cup hero Artem Dzyuba and former Fulham striker Kostas Mitroglou in the final days of the transfer window, it has been claimed.

The Bluebirds desperately wanted to sign a striker before the 11pm deadline on January 31 but only managed to sign versatile midfielder Leandro Bacuna from Reading.

Neil Warnock spoke about the Bluebirds' attempts to sign players in his latest press conference.

He revealed some strikers "didn't want to come in the circumstances" of having to 'replace' Emiliano Sala after the tragic loss of the record signing from Nantes.

Reports in Russian media now claim a €25million offer was made by Cardiff for Russia and Zenit St Petersburg star Dzyuba, which was rejected by the club.

Russian football official Yuri Belous told media outlet Championat: “An agent from England came to me and asked about Artem Dzyuba. Cardiff were considering him.
"I spoke with Artem and he was ready to go to Premier League. But it was always unlikely because Zenit wouldn’t let him to leave before finding a replacement. Yes, Cardiff could offer €25m but money is not an issue for Zenit.”

It's also bee reported in Turkish media that Marseille striker Mitroglou rejected three Premier League offers — one of them from Cardiff — to join Galatasaray on deadline day.

Sabah say the former Fulham man could have joined the Bluebirds on loan but chose an 18-month deal with the Turkish giants as he has family living in Istanbul.

Cardiff were also linked with Southampton's Charlie Austin, Loic Remy and Tottenham Hotspur outcast Vincent Janssen on a frantic deadline day.
It is understood they offered for Club Brugge forward Wesley Moraes too.

Warnock said: “One of (the deals) possibly was, but the terms changed every other day and it was astronomical in the end. Whether they were pushing on our circumstances, I don’t know.

“One or two of the strikers we talked with didn’t really want to come in, in the circumstances. I was pleased with Bacuna, that was a bonus. I should have probably got all three of my targets, but I got two of the three."

Need to look at free agent now. Kostas Mitroglou did flop at Fulham.

If we had signed Artem Dzyuba we would probably have played hoofball and reorted to long throw-ins. I'm glad we didn't, I want to see more of the style we displayed against Bournemouth - along the deck and at pace.

Fair goes Niasse was excellent Saturday. He can play it on the deck and shields the ball well to.

Why do we need to look at free agents? The 25 Man Squad list for the second half of the season went in on Friday. There are no 'spare' places. It is full and cannot be changed. Niasse, Healey and Bacuna came in for Madine, Damour and Connolly. The only exceptions are academy/u21s who were registered with the club before the Thursday deadline.

Seems positive for me and good ambition by our owner to allow funds for deals like this after the record fee for sala too. Hopefully this ambition is a sign of things to come if we can stay up this season. I think the high crowd numbers must be helping too with finances.

Can be signed of course. But would be a waste of money as they couldn’t be registered.

You might have to roll back further and explain the 25 man squad registration to him, as he doesn't seem to understand it ;)

Got to give Niasse credit because v Arsenal and Bournemouth he really was the focal point for the team and he will get more game time than maybe he would have if Sala was still here with us even under the circumstances it seems like he is happy and ready to be that leader up top for us and hopefully gets goals.. you can see the trust from players around him e.g. Paterson and Murphy making runs off him the minute he picks up the ball.

He seems to understand very little about anything really.
I’m wondering about him.
