Report: Levante's Chema Rodriguez rejected Cardiff on deadline day
By Danny Owen

Cardiff City reportedly made a bid to bring La Liga centre-back Chema to the Premier League in January.

Cardiff City failed in a deadline day approach for Levante defender Chema Rodriguez, according to Super Deporte.

The Bluebirds were linked with a whole host of potential targets during the January transfer window but, by the time February begun, the only new player to arrive on South Wales was the former Reading midfielder Leandro Bacuna.

Though this was not for a lack of trying.

According to Super Deporte, Cardiff made a bid to sign Chema on loan for the rest of the season. But it is understood that the 26-year-old turned down a move to the Welsh capital as he did not want to be involved in a relegation battle.

Chema’s Levante are currently 12th in La Liga but they are just five points above the drop zone themselves so the defender could find himself scrapping for survival anyway between now and May.

Chema, who spent time with Atletico Madrid in his younger days, would have provided support for the experienced Sean Morrison and Sol Bamba if he had joined up with Neil Warnock’s side.

Instead, the veteran pair will have to maintain their partnership over the coming months.

Veteran pair ??? Sean Morrison is 28 . If he's a veteran , Peter Crouch must be geriatric ;)

If that's true I'm delighted he didn't come.

He obviously hasn't got the character to do anything other than enjoy a cushy number where he is at the moment and doesn't have the balls to roll his sleeves up in a relegation battle.

It would only have been a loan so even if we did get relegated he could go back to his parent club and be no worse off but if he had joined, worked his socks off and maybe helped us to stay up then he could have been looking at a lucrative move if not to us then to another Premier League team.

We need battlers who are willing to give everything for the club not precious fannies like this bloke.

Bit harsh, the club aren’t just entitled to any player they have an interest in

I am well aware of that but the article suggests that the reason he didn't want to come here was because he didn't want to be in a relegation battle. So he only wants to play for a team who are always going to be at the middle or top of the league?

What we need are players with the character to face the challenge of being in a relegation battle and relish the opportunity to prove that they are good enough to keep our team in this league. What I'm saying is that if the reason given is true then he lacks the character we need.

never even heard of this player. in my view we should have signed someone like robert huth at the start of the season (was available on a free before he retired).

manga and bamba individually are ok players at this level, but bamba needs to play alongside a better defender. both are prone to lapses in concentration and will always give chances away.

I agree, not sure what his situation is at Levante but you would think he would want to play, and the EPL could have been a good shop window for his future, if true what's said he hasn't thought about it very well.
