Parts of the missing plane carrying Emiliano Sala and pilot David Ibbotson have washed up on a beach in France, it is thought.

The light aircraft went missing last Monday evening near the Channel Islands after departing from the French city of Nantes, due to land in Cardiff.

But it disappeared from radar after making a request to descend, and no trace of the aircraft or those on board was found.

The official search to find it ended on Thursday, and a private search began on Saturday, with an underwater search of the seabed scheduled to take place later this week.

Now, the Air Accident Investigation Branch has confirmed parts of seat cushions have washed up on a beach near Surtainville on the Cotentin Peninsula, on the northwest coast of France.

On Monday morning, they were advised by the Bureau d’Enquêtes & d’Analyses (BEA), the French safety investigation authority, that part of a seat cushion had been found on the beach, with a second cushion found in the same area the same day.

They say "it is likely that the cushions are from the missing aircraft".

An official underwater search of an area of around four square nautical miles is now due to take place this week.

I know we suspected as much that the plane had broken up during the crash landing, but it still hurts to read it when they find stuff like that. So, so sad.

Devastating news, if this is confirmed

Just heartbreaking, the only crumb of comfort is that the families should get closure soon

In a way its good, now they got some direction for the search. Yea its hard to say but its more likely worst case scenario now and if they can find the plane and bodies, at the very least the family will have an answer and we will all know.

Hopefully now they can find the bodies so the families can get piEce and finally bury them.

Awful news but also justified in keeping the search going and now there is more hope the ywill find more and it helps the search team,so sad but these 2 men need to rest in peace and families be able to put them to rest.

Part of a seat cushion washed up on a beach in north west France on Monday morning.

Later that day another section of cushion washed up on the same beach at Surainville on the Cotentin Peninsula in Normandy, around 60km from Guernsey.

Investigators from the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) said: "From a preliminary examination we have concluded that it is likely that the cushions are from the missing aircraft."

An AAIB spokesman said: "Based on a detailed assessment of the flight path and last known radar position, we have now identified a priority search area of approximately four square nautical miles.

"Through the Ministry of Defence’s Salvage and Marine Operations (SALMO) Project Team, we have commissioned a specialist survey vessel to carry out an underwater survey of the seabed to try to locate and identify possible aircraft wreckage."

AAIB investigators said their underwater search will last three days.

"Since we opened our safety investigation on Tuesday 23 January, we have been gathering evidence such as flight, aircraft and personnel records, and have been analysing radar data and air traffic tapes. We have been working closely with other international authorities and have kept the families of those involved updated on our progress," said a spokesman.

The £15m striker, 28, was flying back to the UK after signing for Cardiff City in a record deal on the 21st January when the plane disappeared into the English channel.

The Piper PA-46 Malibu plane was being flown by pilot David Ibbotson from Nantes in France for Cardiff when it requested permission to descend before losing contact with Jersey air traffic control.

Football agent Willie McKay arranged for the flight to take Sala from Nantes to Cardiff but had no involvement in selecting the plane or pilot.

McKay's son, Mark, was the acting agent for Nantes in a move which made Sala a club-record transfer for Cardiff.

Members of Sala's family launched a separate search for the wreckage of the plane using funds donated by well-wishers, which is still ongoing. The target was £259,000.

AAIB investigators said they were "liaising closely with those involved" with the family's search efforts to "maximise the chance of locating any wreckage and ensure a safe search operation."

After the private search got under way on Sunday, the family said they were "struggling for answers".

Spokesman David Mearns, who is understood to be assisting the family, had said they still have hope.

Speaking to reporters in Guernsey, he said: "The family still have some hope, they're looking at this as a missing person, a missing plane, and until they are satisfied, that's the mode that we're in."

He added: "This is a family that have come from Argentina with this huge shock out of nowhere and (is) struggling with what had happened, with very, very few answers about an unexplained loss."

It’s Bitter sweet with the news coming from AAIB Annis

Just goes to show how hard it must have been for the Search & Rescue people with currents running like that. Hard as this might sound if it's seat cushions that have been found does that mean the two men got out of plane or did it break apart on impact? If so the bodies could be anywhere


There used to be an old saying that the sea gives up her dead after 7 days so they might end up on a beach somewhere.

So so sad.

Do you honestly think that the 2 individuals could have survived the 20 mile journey from the place that radar contact was lost to this beach?
The AAIB have identified a 4 sq mile area to conduct a sonar search of the sea bed, not to look for survivors on the beach. Time to be realistic I'm afraid.

Looking at the maths it’s squared so an area of 7.5miles total

I know it's a long shot, but how many seats did the plane have. I'm sure it's more than 2 yet only 2 have been found. Could it be possible that they only found 2 because they ejected out of the plane. The pilot done a lot of parachuting, so he could have got them installed if the plane didn't already have them? and I'm sure I read that there were confirmed flares straight after they lost contact. Not that picture we seen on Facebook but actual confirmation that same night? I'm not expecting them to have survived the crash tho.

Sorry mate but this isn't a James Bond film, there was no injector seats, these poor souls are no doubt dead, if they did die I hope it was quick and painless and their bodies are found to bring some peace to both their families.

With an input of intelligent thinking it should be possible to determine an approximate area of the crash site ( with the time scale x tidal episodes ) , then an undersea search to find the wreckage and the bodies , sorry to be blunt but I think we all sumise at this point that nothing short of a miracle will find those two poor souls alive , it's a tragedy that will forever be associated with our beloved club ...
