Underwater search could begin this week

Marine scientist David Mearns said:

We have sourced and hired a survey vessel equipped with state-of-the-art search equipment which will be used to conduct an underwater search for the plane’s wreckage in the area of the last radar contact.

The survey vessel is currently being mobilised in Southampton and subject to weather conditions will be re-positioned to Guernsey on Thursday or Friday this week.

Based on current weather predictions, we are hopeful that the underwater search will begin on the weekend, most probably Sunday.

We would like to thank all the people, all the companies that have offered their help, including Guernsey police and the Harbour Master for their assistance during the family’s visit to the island.

Sala family retrace plane's last movements near Alderney

Sala’s family - including his mother Mercedes and sister Romina - are in Guernsey.

Today, they have taken a flight out to the search area west of Alderney.

After that flight earlier today, marine scientist David Mearns has now given an update to the press at Guernsey Airport.

He said:

“What they did was create as closely as possibly the route of Emiliano Sala’s plane at 5,000ft, descending to 2,200ft.
“They went over the location of the last radar contact.
“They actually recreated the type of pattern that the search and rescue aircraft would have created.
“That, essentially, has been the purpose of the family’s visit to the island, to come here and understand what they’re being told in terms of the search and rescue effort.”

Family trace search area

Emiliano Sala’s family have taken a plane with Guernsey’s Harbour Master, it’s being reported, to fly over Alderney and the area the search focused on last week.

Yesterday, marine scientist David Mearns, who spoke on behalf of the Sala family , said the family were treating this as a missing person case until satisfied otherwise.

He said:

“At some point in time in the future, we’ll be looking at more investigative, technical searches underwater, and that’s all I’ll say about that.”

Eventually searchers will be going under water.

Emiliano Sala's family still have hope and are treating the footballer's disappearance as a missing person case, a spokesperson has said.

The light aircraft on which new Cardiff City signing Sala and pilot David Ibbotson were travelling in disappeared near the Channel Islands on Monday shortly after requesting to descend.

The plane had taken off from the French city of Nantes and had been due to land in the Welsh capital later that night, with Sala due to train with his new club on Tuesday morning.

But the aircraft vanished from radar and, after days of searching by boat and air, the official search operation was stood down on Thursday afternoon.

Marine scientist David Mearns, who spoke on behalf of the Sala family on Sunday, is involved in coordinating this search.

He said the two boats enlisted on Saturday are two Guernsey fishing vessels “that have been visually scanning the area of the last radar contact for any clues to the plane’s whereabouts”.

After meeting Sala’s family in Guernsey on Sunday, Mr Mearns issued a statement to the press, where he said investigative, technical underwater searches are being considered.

He said the Sala family still have hope and are treating this as a missing person case.

He said:

“Until they’re satisfied, that’s the mode we’re in.”
“At some point in time in the future, we’ll be looking at more investigative, technical searches underwater, and that’s all I’ll say about that.”

Sala family 'struggling with very, very few answers about an unexplained loss'

After the light aircraft’s disappearance last Monday evening, Sala’s sister Romina and mother Mercedes are now in Guernsey.

Speaking on Sunday, David Mearns - understood to be involved in the private search for the aircraft - said the family is struggling with limited answers available to them.

ITV report Mr Mearns saying:

“This is a family that has come from Argentina with this huge shock out of nowhere and is struggling with very, very few answers about an unexplained loss.
“They’re looking at this as a missing person, a missing plane and until they are satisfied that’s the mode that we are in.
“As you know locally the search was terminated on Thursday and that was what triggered this private search.
“Today, even as an expert my frame of thinking is alongside with the family’s.
“That’s what I’m trying to do. But we’re trying to give them the best advice that we possibly can.
“You have to appreciate they don’t know the environment, they don’t know the geography.”

It must be unimaginable to go what they are going through.
I thought about an oil slick initially and hoped for the best that the plane was ok and landed somewhere. But when you think about it, I guess the oil and fuel carried by this plane would not be substantially more than a large van/lorry etc. Would you reasonably expect to see anything on this expanse of water, and in those weather conditions? I guess not.

Big jobs on David and the team hands for sure. Do you think we will get good news if they any. At the moment it looks grim.

Always hope until bodies found but there has to be a extremely poor chance of anyone alive , if I wanted someone to carry out underwater searches it would be Mearns , pray something is found even if it's just for the two families closure.

Hopefully they can be found and hopefully alive and on a beach, that what could happen who knows. If the worst comes we will get true it ,but it's a sad story.

David Mearns is a expert and will do everything in his powers.
