Cardiff City v Nantes

I know someone here recently told me off because they felt I was such a recent supporter, but I recall watching Cardiff playing Nantes in the late 60s or early 70's in the cup winners cup. I think we beat them 5 -1 or something actually.

Anyone else remember that ? I'm sure we played SV Hamburg in the previous or following round didn't we ?

I had a season ticket for the Canton Stand but I watched that game from the Grange End - no idea the reason for that now - I'm trying to think.

Good ! It came into my mind just as I was going off to sleep last night. I remembered for some reason a player wearing a number 5 with a yellow shirt and maybe green shorts clearing it off the line and I thought " that was actually Nantes wasn't it ?"
But then I wondered whether my memory was playing tricks on me because of all this horrible stuff.
I'll ask you another then, was Uwe Seeler playing for SV Hamburg because I seem to think he was but I was very dissapointed because I'd been looking forward to seeing him play but he wasn't that impressive ?

I'm afraid I can't remember much about the opposition players from back then. I remember some scores, and can recall watching the likes of Bobby Moore, Rodney Marsh, Tony Currie and a lot of other players I admired, but not the players from the opposition when we were in Europe. Never got down for the Hamburg game, but can still remember the atmosphere and week long build up to the Real Madrid game.

It could be an idea to have an annual pre-season match in memory of Sala with proceeds going to the families, alternate each season home and away, Sala Shield.

My memory is not brilliant but I think Nantes was the same season as our Real Madrid tie. I know Real Madrid was a quarter final match, not sure but I seem to remember the Nantes match was an earlier round in the same year.

Seeler was special though - the German Bobby Charlton. Certainly don't remember any of the others

Think you're getting confused with the Cypriot side PO Larnaca. I don't recall us ever playing Panathinakos. The only Greek team I remember us playing was Goztepe Izmir, who knocked us out on aggregate.

No, it's worse than that actually. Although I still remember Panithanakos for some reason , on reflection I was thinking of Mjondalen which I also had trouble saying. They were Norwegian I think and it was them we got the record score against .
I've avoided Google so far because everyone trying to remember is much more fun, but I'm going to have to check Panathinakos cause I don't know why I remember them

You're exactly right, Dr Google says Pezoporikos Larnaca FC - well remembered !

Not sure about record score. I remember us playing a Norwegian side, Mjondalen or something like that. I'm sure they were a side made up of teachers, carpenters, lumberjacks and so on. I think we won the away leg 7-0, and home we won by four or five. I seem to remember it was the biggest aggregate win in any European competition at that time, may be wrong about that, I stand to be corrected.
