Our Striking options - I don't think are that bad.

Fri Jan 25, 2019 3:36 pm

As I write this, I want it to be known I am constantly thinking about Emiliano, and this is just an attempt to take my mind of it for a little bit so please don't comment how this isn't important because I agree. But this is a football forum and I'm just going to try and make a positive post about the remainder of our season because I have been thinking for a while that I don't really care about who we sign now, and if we stay up. But today is the first day I'm actually looking forward to watching us play again. If I'm honest, I'm in a mix of wanting to watch us on Tuesday just to get the first game over with and in some way in my head it's somewhat of a first step. And another part of me wants to just see how we react, out of curiosity more than anything, though I must admit I will always "expect" too much from Cardiff, except this time I will be more accepting of what happens even if it is a heavy defeat.

^ Now that the intro is out of the way just to somehow allow me to talk about the subject I wanted to bring up, I don't mean any disrespect towards the situation, but let's talk about our players.

We've been excited about signings for a few weeks now, and from Niasse to Sala everyone has been very optimistic. But to be fair, now that things (for me atleast) have been put into perspective, these are our striking options currently.

Niasse, Zohore, Ward & Patterson.

Patterson is a workhorse and has 4 goals for us, he just isn't a natural striker.

Out of the 4 strikers, Patterson is really the only one who's consistently been available for selection. I can't remember Ward playing many for us this season due to injury but the few games He has played included a goal against Arsenal. For me Ward offers us similar to what Patterson does aerially (perhaps not as effective, but still effective), and is a more natural finisher who I still think could cut it in the premier league, so there's something intriguing going on there.
Niasse, like the other 2, is another workhorse but offers something "different". So I don't have much to comment on because I haven't seen too much of him, but from what I hear he could definitely be awkward for opposition defenders to deal with.
Then we have Zohore, who for me is the best of the bunch, mainly because of his contributions to us since Warnock took over, and also just the possibility of what we all know he can do.

I honestly don't think our options up front are as bad as we thought before the window opened, it's probably just because of injuries..but as far as I know everyone is fit at the moment, and to be fair we have 4 options so we'd have to be VERY unlucky to have many more problems with injuries there.

I'm fairly optimistic, but ofcourse less 'excited' i suppose after what we've just been through. But when you look at it, I do back our players to end this season with a fight, wether we go down or not. I think we've got far more about us than we and/or pundits think.

Ken needs to step up to the plate and Paterson looks like he needs a rest

We need to find a way to create opportunities. Either shore up midfield more to release our attacking players or work on passing Better ... Or both. We need to stop shunting the ball high and wildly.

We do still need another specialist striker, even if we have to take a chance on a lesser known one.

ward isn't good enough.

zohore is, but hasn't been this season.

paterson has stepped up to the plate, but isn't a striker, and we need better, more options. i'd still have him in and around the first team as he can play multiple positions.

we have to hope niasse is good enough (and i think he is). but we need another if we want to give ourselves a decent chance of staying up.
