More than 36,000 people demand Emiliano Sala plane search resumes

The search for the missing plane carrying Sala and pilot David Ibbotson was officially called off on Thursday

FRIDAY 25 JAN 2019

The search for the missing plane carrying Sala and pilot David Ibbotson was officially called off on Thursday

More than 36,000 people have signed a petition calling for the Emiliano Sala missing plane search to resume despite search teams being unable to find any trace of the aircraft since this week.

New Cardiff City signing Sala and pilot David Ibbotson were flying in a plane which disappeared from radar on Monday evening near the Channel Islands.

The plane had taken off from Nantes, where Sala had said farewell to his former team-mates before leaving for Cardiff.

After days of searching for the aircraft and its occupants, the search operation was officially called off on Thursday.

Argentine striker Sala's family have since pleaded for the authorities to continue the search, with Sala's father Horacio and sister Romina calling for the operation to resume.

Sala's French club Nantes, which he played for up until last week, said on Thursday: "FC Nantes learned that the search for the aircraft was definitively suspended. This should not be the case: the search must continue."

Now, more than 36,000 people have signed a petition to Guernsey Police backing those pleas.

You can read the latest on what we now know and the questions that remain unanswered here.

This calls to resume the search come despite harbour master Captain David Barker saying in an official statement yesterday that rescue teams had "been unable to find any trace of the aircraft, the pilot or the passenger".

Air and search assets from the Channel Islands, UK and France covered an area of approximately 1,700 square miles — with "a significant amount" of this searched more than once — while mobile phone data and satellite imagery have also been examined.

He said there has been more than 24 hours of continuous searching, with 80 hours combined flying time across three planes and five helicopters. Two lifeboats were also involved, as well as assistance from various passing ships and fishing boats.

Emiliano Sala missing plane search called off

The petition, signed by 36,300 people by Friday morning, has been set up in France, and reads: "The clubs and their supporters are demanding that the search for Emiliano Sala and the pilot of the plane continue for their families and their loved ones."

It comes after calls from Sala's family not to end the search to find them.

Signed and shared. Can't help but feel it's a lost cause now but if they aren't out there looking then there's no chance of finding anything or anyone.

It can't help but maybe the club could pay for someone to overfly the area for a few days to make the family feel better.
Surely there's a local flying enthusiast with a small aircraft who'd volunteer.

Last chance of debris is something being washed up . From there perhaps Holland or Maine USA depending on which direction it went. The surface of the sea moves very very fast you see and anything floating in that area wouldn't stay there long. If it went straight down then it probably won't ever be found - someone made the excellent comparison that they couldn't find the Titanic for many years.
It's a hard balance for search authorities because the realities are very harsh and they've got to balance that against the feelings of the family. Remember though that conducting the search in those dangerous waters is dangerous for the searchers themselves so you can understand why they'd be reluctant to risk other lives for a PR operation which has no chance of success.

It's not 100% impossible that they could still be alive, but they'd be nowhere within 500 miles of where they ditched.

Whilst I have no grievance with the family of Madeleine McCann I do think that, if the government is prepared to make funds and resources available to her, then a bit more of an effort could be made in relation to finding out what happened here.

I don’t want to be reading this message board in two months time and finding out that they made it to Burhou Island

A full sweep of the island is needed at the very least

Salas mobile phone. He would have had it on. Where was the last signal from? - not last message lady signal. That would pin point closer to where phone may have hit water.

A lot is being done but let’s bring this bluebird home :bluebird:

He should club together with Aguero and Higuain for their fellow countryman. I'm sure that ordinary folk would chip in too if they took the lead in this.
