'No hope' of finding Sala alive'

Wednesday 23rd January 2019

John Fitzgerald, the chief officer of Channel Islands Air Search, says that sadly there is ‘no hope’ of finding Sala alive.

The BBC report him as saying:

“Sadly, I really don’t think, personally, there is any hope."
“At this time of year the conditions out there are pretty horrendous if you are actually in the water.”

Fitzgerald adds that “”even the most fit person” - such as a professional footballer - would only be able to last a few hours in the water."

And he may be in a liferaft.

I can't stand that bloke he seemed to be smiling when he was commentating on what happens, he seems to be enjoying his two minutes of fame too much, he should show some respect.

Agree, thought that last night when he was on.

May well be true but thought he had that ' told you so' look.

He is an expert in search and rescue, it’s an awkward interview as there are no facts as of yet, he has been asked and has answered, in his expert opinion; and let be honest he would know. I am sure it’s just a polite smile for the cameras.

An aviation expert on the radio, said its a very risky flight to fly that type of plane low over the water during Winter. Also said that most likely reason for the plane to deseand to 2,700ft was to get rid of ice off the plane.

Insults at this guy aren’t helpful I’m sure he is nervous and trying to give a professional answer to a question.

I don't understand some people, we are all grieving.

IMO it's a reflection on our society when insults are thrown. For some reason a lot of people look for someone to blame, when in fact they should just accept that tragedy's happen. Gutted

I didn't really insult him, just expressing my thoughts that it is disrespectful to smile when commenting on the potential death due to an aeroplane crash, it's a serious matter and nothing to smile about, his manner really annoyed me.

I’m not getting into a row at this time of all times.

Bluebina is right though, I thought exactly the same. Guy had a smug look on his face and appeared to be grinning. I felt that he was enjoying his report too much. I feel totally gutted.

Why weren't the flares mentioned in this report, it all just seems a bit odd

Which Flares ?

John Fitzgerald, the chief officer of Channel Islands Air Search could get a egg on his face, if it turns out they are both alive. Sky Sports News will report any crap.

The flares that have been mentioned in the "a glimmer of hope" thread that you have also commented on. I just don't understand, there is so much conflicting information, reported flares were seen Tuesday, sent a boat to look, spent 30 mins looking with search lights then had to turn in for the night. With that information of flares on a uninhabited island, why weren't there feet on that island today? I'm just confused and saddened by all of this.

This is a very sad and heartbreaking accident that no parent should have to go through, it keeps going through my mind like a bad dream.
RIP young man.

What person would enjoy giving a report like that?! How can you even thin something like that?
