NEIL WARNOCK 'HINTS' AT ADRIEN TAMEZ ARRIVAL?

Tue Jan 08, 2019 1:35 am

Cardiff City are reportedly leading the chase for Nice midfielder Adrien Tameze ahead of Premier League duo Burnley and Watford.

Warnock has hinted he is closing in on new signing.

Daily Mirror

Tuesday 8th January 2019

Nice lost Jean Michel Seri to Fulham in the summer and the Ligue 1 outfit could now bid farewell to another of their key midfielders.

Adrien Tameze has shone in Seri’s absence this season, thriving under the leadership of Patrick Vieira to catch the eye of a number of Premier League clubs.

According to The Mail, Watford were planning a £10 million for Tameze, with the 24-year-old lined up as a replacement for the PSG target Abdoulaye Doucoure.

It is understood that Burnley and Cardiff are also interested in the Frenchman, who can play in central midfield or in defence if required.

But, if the Mirror is to be believed, it is Cardiff who are leading the chase for Tameze ahead of Burnley and Watford.

Neil Warnock manager of Cardiff City before the Sky Bet Championship match between Fulham and Cardiff City at Craven Cottage on September 9, 2017 in London, England.

Manager Neil Warnock (7 January, page 45) has indicted that the Bluebirds are closing in on their first signing of the transfer window, stating; “We’ve almost agreed terms for one particular player.”

The Mirror believes that the 70-year-old is talking about Tameze, a player whose energy, physicality and ball-winning ability marks him out as a sensible addition for a hard-working and organised Cardiff side.

Adrien Tamèze scouting report: How good is Cardiff City's likely first signing and where will he fit in?
By Josh Williams

We take a look at the French midfielder who could be Bluebirds bound

After publicly losing the battle to sign Liverpool's Nathaniel Clyne, Cardiff City boss Neil Warnock appears to have moved on to his next target.

The Bluebirds are rumoured to be on the verge of securing their first signing of the month in the shape of Adrien Tamèze, the central midfielder plying his trade under Patrick Vieira at French Ligue 1 club Nice.

So, what sort of player could Warnock be getting? We take a look.

Player Profile

Tamèze is 24 years old, and was signed by Nice from Valenciennes for less than £1m in the 2017 summer transfer window, after previously being contracted to AS Nancy.

The former French under-18 international has developed into an interesting prospect after playing first-team football for almost two seasons.

Vieira's preferred formation for Nice includes a midfield three and Tamèze is most commonly deployed at the base of that. He's responsible for breaking up play and winning defensive duels, but is also at ease progressing the ball forward when required to do so.

A bit like Vieira himself as a player, you might say, although at 5ft 11in Tamèze doesn't have the 6ft 4in stature of Arsenal and France midfield colossus Vieira.

Although not the most creative, completing just 0.7 key passes, and 0.9 dribbles per match according to WhoScored, Tamèze showcases the talent to contribute in a number of areas providing he's used in the correct role.

Technically, Tamèze offers a fair amount. He's predominantly right-footed, which can hinder him in certain situations because of his reluctance to use his weaker foot, but he's more capable in possession than the traditional British defensive midfielder.

Tamèze is comfortable receiving the ball, and regularly shifts his body intelligently in order to shield it from opponents looking to regain possession from him. Tamèze has also developed a passing range, which he consistently demonstrates with diagonal balls to switch play from one side of the pitch to the other.

He's a great believer in possession being nine tenths of the law because his passing accuracy success rate is 89.4% so far this season in Ligue 1.

How will he cope with the Premier League?

Physically, Tamèze exhibits the fitness, strength and stamina to succeed in the aggressive nature of British football. Strong and athletic, he has completed the full 90 minutes in 14 of his 18 appearances for Nice this year.

Tamèze is also mobile, possessing a respectable amount of pace - more, perhaps, than Aron Gunnarsson.

He isn't the tallest, but wins 47.5% of his aerial duels according to Wyscout, in comparison with Gunnarsson's fairly similar 51.8%.

Tamèze's heading figure is likely to decrease in the Premier League though, given the increased physicality and greater number of high balls in comparison to the French League.

Mentally, Tamèze appears composed and he displays this when dealing with the ball in pressure situations. He rarely gives it away, even when surrounded by two or thee opponents.

He's also clearly a very competitive player, who is willing to run and battle for his team-mates, which is a vital trait for any Warnock team.

Such qualities are obviously a necessity given Cardiff's fight against relegation. Having players who will give 100% is an absolute pre-requisite for Warnock and Tamèze certainly fits that bill.

How He'll Be Used

Cardiff's need for midfield depth was emphasised when they lost at Gillingham and Joe Ralls and Loic Damour were unable to control the game.

Warnock's first choice midfield trio has become Gunnarsson, Harry Arter and Victor Camarasa and it's hard to see that being broken up at the moment.

But Tamèze is being brought in for a reason. His likely role would appear to be either as holding defensive midfielder in place of Gunnarsson, to come on as a substitute to help see out games, or as a back-up rotation to keep Gunnar fresh.

It's a role that should be similar to the one he's learned with Nice, helping shield the back four when Cardiff go forward and providing the drive needed to get the team on the front foot.

In the defensive phase of play, Tamèze will be responsible for intercepting, tackling and ultimately battling to win duels to stop front men getting at Sean Morrison and Sol Bamba.

Then, once Cardiff gain possession, Tamèze will be able to contribute to their attacking phase by simply feeding the ball forward, often to initiate counters, to one of the five players positioned ahead of him.

He has the passing range, and accuracy, to be able to do that.

The instruction, by and large, will be win the ball and get it to Camarasa, or one of the two wide men Warnock tends to deploy - normally Junior Hoilett and Josh Murphy.

Will he be a Bluebirds hit?

It seems a good acquisition for the Bluebirds to chase. Cardiff would be signing a promising midfielder whose best years are ahead of him, but who is already seasoned enough to be able to contribute immediately.

It's the best of two worlds for Cardiff. They could net a player whose value would rise if he shines in the Premier League, but who could also make an instant mark as Cardiff try to avoid relegation.

The Bluebirds can't afford any passengers. Tamèze won't be one.

Sounds like a promising signing if this report is correct, and he’s our next signing.

My only worry with players who play in leagues like Ligue 1 and Serie A, is those leagues are nowhere near the Premier League in overall standard and competitiveness.

But will trust Warnock’s judgement if this is true.

Sounds like an expensive transfer, with £10m said to be what Watford were considering.

Hint all he likes, until he's holding up the shirt it's rubbish.

Though I do hope this is true as gunnarsson let's way to much play flow through the middle of the park, and hasn't the pace anymore or the fitness to keep chasing.
Tameze is the type of player we lack wich other teams like Palace, Watford, West ham, have.

Probably go to Watford for £10M.

What worries me about this guy is the fact Fulham paid £25mill for Seri from Nice. He was apparently the better, most sought after player they had and he has totally flopped for Fulham.
What makes us think Tameze will fair any better as he is not rated as highly as Seri.

Only worth talking about players once they are a City player. Due to low fees/wages I have no confidence of City bringing in anyone until we know it’s a done deal. So many times we have been so near a signing yet we nearly always miss out.

If there is other Premiership competition for a player we nearly always miss out. Hopefully this will be a signing & then it would be some worthwhile to discuss.

You're right, Gunnarsson is way off the pace of the Premier League, the opposition just ghosts past him. If we get a more mobile holding midfielder who can pass better than Gunnarsson I'm sure we'll see a big improvement in our play.

Gutted if this is true. Just what we needed as gunnarsson needs a rest.
