HOW IT STANDS: CLYNE (NOW TO BOURNEMOUTH), TEMEZE, NIASSE

Cardiff City's pursuit of Liverpool star Nathaniel Clyne, Everton's Oumar Niasse and French midfielder — the exact situation
ByDominic Booth

Cardiff City remain hopeful of securing a loan deal for Liverpool's Nathaniel Clyne, despite new interest from Bournemouth.

The Bluebirds are also understood to have enquired about £10million-rated OGC Nice midfielder Adrien Tameze, who is also a target for the Cherries as well as Watford and clubs from Italy's Serie A.

Everton's Oumar Niasse remains a target for Neil Warnock's men too.

With the January transfer window silly season clicking into overdrive - with multiple players linked with Cardiff - here's the exact situation with three bona fide targets...

Nathaniel Clyne
As reported by WalesOnline back in November, Clyne is one of Neil Warnock's top January targets with the Cardiff boss - a long-term admirer of the England international, having managed him at Crystal Palace - keen to add a right-back to his squad.

Warnock sees Clyne as the ideal fit to play wing-back in a five-man defence that he has only used in fits and starts this season.

Fulham and West Ham are other clubs to have been linked with Clyne in various media reports.

But it now seems to be a two-horse race between Cardiff and Bournemouth.

Injuries to two of Eddie Howe's defenders, Adam Smith and Simon Francis, have put the south coast club on red alert to try and snatch Clyne from under Cardiff's noses.

Clyne is expected to feature for Liverpool in their FA Cup tie against Wolves on Monday night, but could complete a temporary switch elsewhere days after that.

Adrien Tameze

It is understood that Cardiff have lodged an enquiry for the in-demand French midfielder, who has impressed in Ligue 1 this term.

Central midfield is not top priority for Warnock this month, though the 24-year-old - who can also play in defence - is viewed as a potential successor to Aron Gunnarsson in the holding role.

Cardiff could lose Gunnarsson - whose contract expires in the summer - as well as season-long loan players Harry Arter and Victor Camarasa at the end of the campaign.

Tameze is attracting lots of interest this month and Cardiff may find it difficult to secure his signature, despite the fact he fits the bill in terms of age, stature and club experience.

Oumar Niasse

With a deal with Nantes striker Emiliano Sala now appearing unlikely, Cardiff may have to turn their attention elsewhere if they're to land the striker Warnock craves in this transfer window.

Niasse has long been linked with a switch to Cardiff since Warnock made a tongue-in-cheek remark about the Everton frontman on the radio.

He's a fan, though the Toffees want £8million for the 28-year-old Senegalese star.

Cardiff will explore every possible avenue in their hunt for a striker this month. Niasse is on their radar, but there are plenty of other options available.

I will give a summary of the position :

We havent signed anyone, are unlikely to and at best may end up with a couple of bench warming players by 31st Jan if we offload a couple. Despite this we can peddle the same old dross that everyone is working very hard to get players in but its difficult this time of the year blah blah blah. Meanwhile our rivals will have strengthened much earlier than us (if indeed we do) because they are not sticking to a middle of the table championship type budget. FFS do we want to stay up or what ? I know its early in the window but we may as well fast forward a few weeks. We cant afford to wait until end of Jan . We have already seemingly lost a point due to our goal difference getting a pasting every time we play a top 6 side. We need people in now with some massive games this month

I agree with a lot that you say in that City need to be doing their business early. There’s not many decent players floating around in Jan and those that are available get snapped up early. I hope the club push the boat out because we have a decent chance of staying up if we invest wisely now. Another (150m) next season for a 20-30m investment. A major problem is attracting the players to the club. Some just don’t want to or can’t handle a relegation battle particularly if it’s a permanent signing & Championship football next season.

With NW previously managing Clyne I thought this may have been a done deal.
Looks like we are making hard work again of getting recruits in early.

Klopp decides where his players go, I guess he would prefer clyne to go to a mid table team rather than to a bottom 5 team!

Agreed our whole approach seems slapdash. Look at the start of the season we left it to the very last minutes to sign Arter and probably the only reason we signed Camarasa is we just happened to be playing Real Betis in a friendly and they mentioned he was available. It's only the 4th January and most of the targets that might of been any good seem to be going elsewhere. We are left delving round in the remainders basket that got us Gounobe and Velijonja. To be frank I don't trust the board or Warnock to come up with much. Possibly our season depends on Zohore and Ward getting fit and finding some form.
